Inspiration floats across the green wilderness of Pen-y-Fan as the first rays of the summer sun seek a new beginning. Darkness disappears, evil is forgotten as the warm glow of the rising sun gathers up the silver mist and gently bades it farewell.

At the top of the valley an aging hawk slowly opens its eyes, catches a glimpse of a young rabbit alone in the ferns but has not the heart to end its days. Birdsong fills the air, the gentle sound of nature reawakening helps us to believe that today is a special day – for early on a summer morning – with all the joys of life revealed our reason for being here is clear.

And they’re back up!

Last weekend we got up really early and visited one of the local beaches at Al Wakra – took a flask of coffee, a stove, some music and me and Mrs Dog watched the sunrise. We do this quite often, but last week the sunrise was amazing and it struck me how perfect the Earth is, how wonderful the simple pleasures of nature are and of course how fragile this planet is.

So while munching on my bacon butty I thought I would put together a music mix to reflect the simple, pure pleasures that surround us – a mix to remind us how perfect our planet is – a mix to hopefully help us to enjoy Earth.

The Enjoy Earth mix (195 mb) will be available here to download for the next fortnight (until midnight on 20 February 2011).

The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006), was one of the albums that you buy, listen to a few times then kinda forget about (except for Roscoe of course) so when I heard that they had a new album out I wasn’t too bothered and did not plan to buy. I then read Andy Gill’s five star review and thought mmm maybe I’m missing something here. I replayed Trials remembered why I’d liked it and bought The Courage of Others and I am very glad I did – thanks Andy.

While Trials is more keyboard based with influences of Fleetwood Mac screaming at you, this album recalls for me the sound of Nick Drake, Fairport Convention and other guys from the late ’60s English-folk scene as Tim Smith displays an understanding of this and how to make it sound and feel more modern and more accessible to us young ‘uns.

Recommended to all who like the sound of dew drops falling from a misty winter’s sky
