After last month’s global gastronomic gallop I’m sorry to say that it’s back to normality with only a falafel sandwich and bottle of Heineken to keep me company as I write my (rather shorter) notes for this month’s music mix. Still, it’s a very lovely falafel sandwich and the Heineken will hopefully lubricate and refresh the parts… you know the rest.

[01] Thin Lizzy – Soldier of Fortune [Still Dangerous: Live at the Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977]
With the classic lineup of vocalist/bassist Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey, and the dual lead guitar attack of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, Thin Lizzy were one of the best live bands of their era, maybe one of the best live bands ever. Their Live and Dangerous album is probably better known than this album but I love the rawer feel to some of the songs here – in particular this track which highlights all that is good about the band.

I miss Phil Lynott.

On their Myspace pages, Rotor describe their musical undertaking as “a flowered German tank full of Iranian neohippies on mescaline in their search of the holy hole races through Your auditory canal” – what more can I add?

I can still remember buying Steve’s first album ‘Alive on Arrival’ – I must have been around 14 or 15 when all my friends were buying Purple and Zep etc. and were aghast at this music that I was listening to.

I didn’t care, I loved the album, loved the guy, loved his songs. Recently bought his greatest hits What Kinda Guy and am still amazed how good this guy is – a true talent.

Here’s to all you all you lucky dogs, it’s heads or tails.
Here’s to all you filthy rich, I wish you well.
Here’s to all the pretty women made for cash.
And here’s to dashing daddy’s son he’s such a flash.

Well, I been lookin’ and walkin’ ’round the sunset square,
Singin’ an’ talkin’ with my friends down there,
Here’s to money in my hand and where it went.

Well, I got my fingers a-tapping on the hard, stone steps.
I’m waiting for lightning and the rains to fall.
No Ghost is the title track from Canadian indie folk band The Acorn’s latest album. These guys have received a lot of good reviews from people like Guy Garvey, especially for their last album ‘Glory Hope Mountain’. They appear to be heading the right direction with this album with band leader Rolf Klausener in fine form both vocally and with his songs. I like the crazy way this song sounds (especially the drums) – it’s like they just pressed record and went for it –
sparkling stuff.

Make way for the “First Lady of Neo-Soul” – a lady with the voice that can unzip flies at a 100 metres (damn, just so sexy). I’ve always loved a soulful female voice – Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone all have a special place in my CD collection, but it has to be Erykah that really does the business. For me she is just so earthy, so ‘just don’t give a sh*t’, just so good. Aided and abetted by Roy Ayers and Bilal Mama’s Gun the album that this song opens is, I believe, her best where she combines jazz, blues, soul and hip-hop into one seamless mix.

[06] Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer [Furr]
Blitzen Trapper is a Portland, Oregon-based experimental folk rock band. Formed in 2000, the band currently operates as a sextet, with Eric Earley (guitar/vocals), Erik Menteer (guitar/keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums/vocals), Michael VanPelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboards), and Marty Marquis (guitar, keyboards, vocals). The launch of their new album ‘Destroyer of the Void’ reminded me that I have their 2008 release Furr which I hadn’t played in ages. Big mistake, as it’s a lovely album full of catchy songs, big hooks and excellent words – recommended.

[07] Black Country
[08] The Great Divide
[09] Medusa

I wasn’t going to mention that word SUPERGROUP – but it is very hard not to, especially when talking about the debut album from Black Country Communion the Anglo/American band comprising vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple Black Sabbath, Trapeze), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner), Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Alice Cooper) and blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa – it’s hard because they are a SUPER GROUP.

I had a number of contenders for this month’s Album of the Month – Robert Plant, Neil Young, Black Mountain, InVertigo and it was getting a tough call to decide which one to select. Then I bought BCC and the decision of which album to make my best of the month became a lot easier.

Quite simply the album is stunning – hard rock at it’s very best. I do not think you will find a better rock album this year. The key to this are the performances of Bonham, Hughes and in particular Joe Bonamassa who sounds like he was to born to play in this band. They have gelled instantly, written some great tunes and play them very well – what more can you ask for?

[10] Neil Young – Love And War [Le Noise]
I recently asked “Why can’t they write their own tunes anymore?”, citing new albums by Plant, Gabriel, Collins, CSN and Clapton where they have covered old songs instead of writing new.

Neil Young once again shows what a legend he is by delivering an album full of new material. I know it’s only eight songs and it’s only him on guitar, but when you have the ability to write songs that still make you go wow… as in one verse of this song… then you just have to keep writing songs.

I see a lot of young men go to war
And leave a lot of young brides behind
I see em try and explain it to their kids
I see a lot of them failing

Young has the talent to simplify some of the hardest things to think and say, so that it all kinda makes sense – and I believe should make his peers stop and think.

[11] Black Mountain – Rollarcoaster [Wilderness Heart]
Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock-band composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. Wilderness Heart (the band’s third album) is nothing new but does provide a good mix of rock and blues along with some excellent finger-picked acoustic guitar that makes the album stand out from the crowd. This song is a good example of what to expect with its chuggin bass and guitar – mmm, yep me likes.

[12] Robert Plant – Silver Rider [Band of Joy]
My favourite track from his latest album Band of Joy and the one that I keep going back to as it has all the hallmarks of a great song.

Originally written by Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of the band Low for their 2005 album The Great Destroyer – Plant has taken it and made the song his own. Broody, moody yet magnificent describe the track – listen to the guitar, high up in the mix, dominating the song with Plant and Griffin almost whispering the words – awesome.

I have not yet written a review of this album (new job is taking its toll on my blogging time) but I do like – it was a contender for my album of the month as it’s good, yes very good. And although the songs are covers and I do seriously have a problem with this, the songs are not, on the whole, popular songs so it’s almost like you are hearing them for the first time.

Phil Collins – Four-in-a-Row

One of the most bizarre nights out I ever had was going to see a Phil Collins tribute artist at a local club. The club had organized a series of these events with the likes of Neil Diamond, Tina Turner, Queen all performing while the local clientele dined on their baskets of chicken and chips and pretended to be posh by ordering Blue Nun and Lambrini. They were actually quite good nights as the tribute bands were very good – they played the hits – the Dog hit the dance floor – drank a wee bit too much – woke up with hangover etc. etc. But this Phil Collins tribute night was just weird – weird with a capital ‘W’.

No disrespect to the tribute guy (or to Phil Collins) but how does one pay tribute to someone who defines the word bland, is a prime example of ordinary? All the tribute guy could do was put a pot of paint on his piano and change into orange dungarees!!! Phil ain’t no Freddie.

This, I believe, is one of the reasons why Phil Collins gets such bad press, gets criticized – especially in ‘rock circles’, because the guy is too much like you and me. This criticism is unfair as Collins should be regarded as one of best British songwriters of the last 30 years – no question about that – instead he is a figure of fun (think Spitting Image) – to me, as a music lover, this is unfair. Also, some ‘rock fans’ will always have a problem with him taking over the singing duties in Genesis from Peter Gabriel and guiding them to a less progressive, more modern and MOR sound. Some say he destroyed the band – I wonder if Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford complained when the royalties tripled?

Another reason he’s not Mr. Popular is that he is very successful at what he does – did you know that Collins is one of only three recording artists (along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson) who have sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as solo artists and (separately) as principal members of a band. What’s wrong with the guy writing good songs, for Disney, for Marilyn Martin, winning Grammys and having hits? I do not have a problem with this – but I know some do.

The four tracks here represent for me the best of Phil Collins – I could have made the whole mix a tribute – but instead I selected four songs that demonstrate his ability as a drummer – this live version of The Knife shows his energy behind the skins. His work with Anthony Philips, ex Genesis guitarist, shows us his good voice, ‘Misunderstanding’ one of my favorite Genesis songs showcases his songwriting skills and ‘In the Air Tonight”- well what can one say about this amazing song. You have to play it to remember how good it actually is and how good those drums sound at 3:41 – true genius.

Is it me or are these just the perfect lyrics?

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake
I waited in the rain for hours
And you were late

Now it’s not like me to say the right thing
But you could’ve called to let me know
I checked your number twice, don’t understand it
So I went home

Well I’d been waiting for this weekend
I thought that maybe we could see a show
Never dreamed I’d have this feeling
Oh but seeing you is believing
That’s why I don’t know why
You didn’t show up that night

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake
I was waiting in the rain for hours
And you were late

Since then I’ve been running around trying to find you
I went to the places that we always go
I rang your home but got no answer
Jumped in my car, I went round there
Still don’t believe it
He was just leaving

There must be some misunderstanding
There must be some kind of mistake…

Mavis Staples was born July 10, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois which makes her the same age as my mother. Which is pretty amazing when you consider she (Mavis I mean) has been singing for over 60 years – and she still sounds sooooooooooo good.

“I wanted to make an album where every song had meaning”, she says about her new album ‘You Are Not Alone’, “where every song told a story and would lift you up and give you a reason to get up in the morning. And I know it’s going to feel really good singing these songs on stage.”

The album was produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy with well-chosen covers by Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint and John Fogerty you kinda know you going to be hearing some quality music – it doesn’t disappoint.

I wonder if Mavis can make a trifle like me mam… nah, doubt it.

Baaba Maal (born November 12, 1953) is a Senegalese singer and guitarist born in Podor, on the Senegal River – so he’s a bit of a spring chicken compared to our last artist. Baaba’s songs, especially Tiedo, display a wonderful balance of 70s soul, a hint of jazz and lashings of traditional Senegalese music – a perfect combination. So relaxing, just perfect to accompany end of day red wine therapy.

Don’t know much about these guys except that they’re a German band that sound like early Genesis, Marillion – almost made it as my album of the month (I like it that much) and Dirk thinks they are “da hund’s hoden”.

I do believe that visitors to this site have one thing in common – we all love music. In particular, my merry band of regulars (you know who you are) display a passion for music that is sometimes quite overwhelming. You guys know your stuff, you know what you like, but you are also so open to the suggestions of others, because. I feel, you love music and want to hear and discover.

I therefore have a question for you – What Makes a Good Album Great?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, especially now as I’m fasting (NO NEW MUSIC TIL AUG 1st) and I wonder what makes an album that you buy, listen to, listen to again and again suddenly go from great to good?

I did a bit of research and The Guardian reckons it’s the history, the theme, the cover and how it all hangs together. Me, I think this is a load of tosh. For me the history, or where the album comes from has little influence on whether I like it or whether it’s a good album. The theme (or concept) don’t mean much, the cover or art work – not a major factor after I’ve bought although I think we all can admire a good album cover.

Now how it all hangs together is a different kettle of fish – this is where, I think, we start to get to what makes a good album great. The flow, the feel, how it all hangs together – this, for me is one factor in the making of a great album. Take for example Lauryn Hill and her album ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ – I did not like this sort of music before I bought, but this album and the way it hangs together, the feel of it, make this for me a great album

The history is important, but not how The Guardian defines it, to me history is personal, history is hearing a certain album at a certain time of your life that cements it into a special place in your life, so that whenever you hear a song from the album, you will always remember this special time and place. For me one example has to be Deep Purple ‘In Rock’:

which simply conjures up memories of a fantastic childhood, great family, great friends, great times and more great times.

Have you noticed nobody has mentioned the music yet? Well this may seem too simple to some, but for me, one of the main things that make a great album is the songs and preferably 12 or more of them. For example Shea Seger ‘ The May Street Project’ has 12 great songs – nothing more nothing less a truly great album full of good songs… simple…

Or is it?

What do you think makes a good album great?

Pineapple Thief – have always been labeled as a band who sound like Radiohead, Muse even a poor man’s Porcupine Tree.
However…… ‘Someone Here Is Missing’ is a big step forward, a very good album – an album that only sounds like Pineapple Thief. They have discovered their own identity, their own sound, big chords, melodic piano, crunchy keyboards, modern prog rock at it’s best. Highlights include ‘Preparation For Meltdown’ ‘The State We’re In’ and the opener ‘Nothing At Best’.

Big Big Train – The Underfall Yard – another band who don’t give a hoot about trends and fashions and keep on producing good old fashioned prog rock. Think of course early Genesis, Yes etc. etc. and you have the sound. But….and this is a big BUT it sounds really fresh and modern – great music, well played by a band that know how to play – this is their sixth album. Not every ones cuppa of tea I know, but when you’re in the mood for a bit of escapism, for some long and winding tunes think Big Big Train.

I so wanted to give this a good review. Why? Two reasons – I like Gabriel and believe he is a very talented guy who has provided me and many other music lovers hours of musical pleasure, not only through his own music but through the many artists and bands he has helped promote through WOMAD and other media. Second reason is that this album has been slagged off by many both in the press and on Amazon and I would have liked to have posted a positive review.

Unfortunately, the people who have written these positive reviews must have shit in their ears.

The idea to take a song and cover it in a different way is nothing new and has been done to great effect before – think Nazareth’s Love Hurts as a fine example. Gabriel has attempted this but his efforts lack variety, lack diversity and all we are left with is a dirge of sound that is cluttered with noise. Each track tends to start with a slow intro (normally piano) then builds and builds into this emotional crescendo with Gabriel shouting his emotion as the orchestra tries to keep pace with his angst that is simply out of control.

First time I listened to it I pressed stop on my CD player after around track 6. Second time I played it I fell asleep. I have since tried, really tried to play it and find out what Gabriel was trying to achieve here – sadly I cannot. Heroes is not a bad track but the only highlight for me is ‘Boy in the Bubble’ which is done some justice and the re-working to a piano only song draws attention to the song and emphasizes the great lyrics.

Sadly the Dog does not recommend.

November Music Mix Notes

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart
I just can’t resist a thumping good bass line – and this has a thumping good bass line in spades. Plus I love the way the song keeps its sparkle throughout its 8 minutes and 26 seconds – not a dull moment to be had and a great way to start the mix. The album “Narrow Stairs” is worth a look at too, in my opinion it’s their best yet – though my pups disagree.

Everclear – So Much For The Afterglow
Their 2000 album “Songs from an American Movie, Vol. 1: Learning How to… ” is a better album and introduced me to the band but this song just powers along at the speed of diarrhea with a riff to die for. I can’t dance but I can certainly move my butt to this.

Lucinda Williams – Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
This song reminds me so much of a holiday in France in 2001 when me and Mrs. Dog would sing along to this as we drove south – much to the dismay of my pups. But what a great song – you know I love Luci (Blue was included on Augusts mix) and I do love a song that rhymes ‘Eggs ‘n’ Bacon’ with ‘House in Macon’ – just superb.

Athlete – Love Come Rescue
Great album (see review), great band and this is a rather surprising song from them – a slow acoustic song – simple but good.

Gomez – Natural Reaction
Such a good band and make it as my ‘Artist of the Month” with 2 songs in my mix. This song has a great chorus – I’d forgotten how much I like a good chorus:
“I get so nervous
Waitin’ for a natural reaction and
I can’t stop thinkin’
You’ve exposed (?)
Leave me a nervous wreck
… a nervous wreck”
And the bridge near the end which almost turns into a Russian folk song? Good stuff.

Grand Drive – Love and the Truth
From their fourth album “The Lights in This Town Are Too Many to Count”, this song takes an age to develop but when it does it really does it in style with the bass and drums simply doing what bass and drums do best kicking it into life making this the Wilson brothers (Danny and Julian) best song.

Gruff Rhys – Candylion
From Gruff’s 2007 solo album, this song just begged me to be included into my mix – and who can resist a song with lyrics like “A penguin and carnation/A lemon and Dalmatian” – he is such a good songwriter.

Gomez – Make No Sound
Second track on the mix from Gomez and the title track from their Mercury winning debut album – great song, great album, great band – what else do you need to know?

Irma Thomas – In the Middle of it All
Track number 9 and time to slow it down a little and who better to do that than the wonderful Irma Thomas. I’ve always loved a good voice, especially a female soul voice, and they don’t come much better than Irma’s. It has so much character and style that she could sing the yellow pages and have me in tears. This song is from ‘After the Rain’ which has come to mean so much to the people of her home town of New Orleans after hurricane Katrina hit them and as with all good soul and R&B, it takes a heartache to make the song good – this song is special.

Anita O’Day – Sweet Georgia Brown
Even I find this a strange choice to be included in my music mix – but you know that I do like different types of music and this is such a classic version of a classic song – perfect for singing in the shower. Here’s an extract from the bio on her website:

“Anita O’Day, was the last surviving member of the great jazz singers (whose ranks also include Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan). Born in Chicago, O’Day gained national attention as the girl singer with drummer Gene Krupa’s orchestra on the hit record “Let Me Off Uptown”. After two tenures with Krupa and one, in-between, with Stan Kenton and his Orchestra, O’Day became a solo star and, along with Fitzgerald and Vaughan, a founding fore-mother of modern jazz vocals.”

I especially love the intro with just drum and voice then the band kicks in and all hell breaks loose “Sweet Georgia Brown”.

Craig Armstrong – ‘Wake Up In New York’ feat. Evan Dando
Atmospheric chill out music at its best – the album ‘As If To Nothing’ has a gorgeous quality to it with collaborations with Bono and The Edge, Mogwai, and David McAlmont but it’s this track that stands out for me and always makes me stop and listen.

Iggy Pop – Lust for Life
Couldn’t resist Amazon’s description of this song – “The relentless, driving drums and thunderous bass of the opening title track are the magic components that make it the best song Iggy Pop ever recorded without the Stooges” – says it all really. Another one for the shower!

Guru – Loungin’
Another bass line from Heaven but this time it’s a wee bit jazzy and soulful. I bought both the album that this song is from (Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1) and Vol. 2 when I didn’t really know what I was buying – I just loved the music. My Dad is a big jazz fan, and even he loves this song with the trumpet and reference to the old jazz greats – “loungin’ loungin’ – mellow out we’re loungin.”

Four Tet – She Moves Me
From the 2003 album ‘Rounds’ this is a fine example of electronic music (sic I hate that term) that treats the listener on to a wonderful acoustic guitar melody that makes the drum loop and synth come to life.

Dire Straits – Down to the Waterline
The guitar is a wonderful instrument and the sound of Mark Knopfler’s guitar on their 1978 debut demonstrates how it really should sound. Pure genius, pure British rock/blues at its best – this is their best album (though Communiqué is close) – forget their later albums, this cannot be beaten and is a true reflection of Knopfler’s talent – a great song.

So… we’re on track 16 – how’s it been so far? Me, I’m having a ball, next song please!

Feeder – Just the Way I’m Feeling
There are better songs on the album “Summer’s Gone” and the title track “Comfort in Sound” to name but two but it’s this song, I feel truly highlights how they were feeling at this time with the sad death of drummer Jon Lee, in January 2002 – the chorus says it all…

and i feel it’s going down
10 feet below the ground
i’m waiting for your healing hands
1 touch can bring me round
i feel we’re going down
10 feet below the ground
it’s just the way i’m feeling
yeh yeh it’s just the way im feeling

Dada – All I Am
When I lived in the UK, I would spend many enjoyable hours searching the CD dump-bins of my local Woolworths and W. H. Smiths looking for albums for 2 quid (sometimes less) that I would like. I often bought just because I recognized the producer or simply liked the artwork on the cover. Very often these purchases ended up in the bin – sometimes they ended up at the front of CD collection. This is one example – I can’t even remember where or when I bought it – and I’m not going to spoil your fun by doing a google search for information on the band ‘cos I know nothing about them either – just love the song.

The Golden Animals – Steady Roller
From their 2008 debut album “Free Your Mind and Win a Pony” that apparently they recorded somewhere in the Californian desert in temperatures in excess of 120 degrees! The album is OK, not great – this song is by far the highlight although ‘Queen Mary’ and ‘I Want You To Come’ are pleasant enough.

Cary Brothers – Ride
Love the muted guitar on this song and the dreamy vocals – plus it blends so well with the previous song by the Golden Animals. This is from the only EP of theirs I own, ‘Waiting for Your Letter’. Think I’m going to have buy some more of their stuff.

Eddi Reader – Jamie Come Try Me
Fabulous voice, fabulous song – the album gets a bit repetitive at the end but this song is a worthy addition to my mix and brings a lovely Celtic feel to proceedings.

Genesis – Undertow
From their ninth studio album ‘And Then There Were Three’ released in 1978 this must be one of my favourite Genesis tracks. I haven‘t got the original album on vinyl anymore (this is from their Platinum Collection) but I can remember being overawed by the sheer quality of the whole album. Great song to end my Music Mix for November – hope you enjoy.

Don’t forget – if you like a song on the Mix, let me know, I’d love your feedback.
