Laughing Dog July 2009

Hey Laughing Dog,
How’s it going? I was wondering if you new of any modern Qatari bands in your neck of the woods who play rock, jazz, soul, etc..
I know Dubai has a few (such as Abri) but I am struggling to find a qatari equivelant. If you could let me know of anyone it would be greatlt appreciated.
Cheers,
Nick
Hi Nick,
I live in Qatar as well and can tell you that there’s not much going on. It mostly cover bands with middle aged/pot-bellied/grey haired teachers and oil workers thinking their Miles Davis or John Lennon – pretty boring. Laughing dog has told us about Dunestock which is a sort of mini festival in the desert now that is good but again some of the bands are not that great but the gig itself is great plenty of beer BBQ etc.
I lived in Dubai for a short time before coming here and the music scene is much better there – especially for attracting major artists especaily the Desert Rock Festival which I thought was great cannot imagine that happening here for a while.
Hi Nick,
Thanks for posting – I think Mr. Sin Again has captured the musical flavour of Doha – especially his comment “It mostly cover bands with middle aged/pot-bellied/grey haired teachers and oil workers thinking their Miles Davis or John Lennon” – good one Mr. Sin.
I can recommend the Piano Bar in the old Movenpick by the harbour – great jazz trio on a Friday night but again playing covers and of course there’s Dunestock where I can remember seeing a band called ‘The Gap’ who were excellent really tight playing again covers but good ones. There was Garveys, which is sadly no longer with us, who would host bands and The Rugby Club has music nights – which is about it.
Sorry I cant be more helpful – will check with my son and daughter to see if they can help us
