Stretching Twilight

Stretching TwilightCover image by Technoflid

I’ve gone for a slightly more chilled approach, what with summer drawing to a close and the long nights drawing in. Bert’s provided us with a big, rock playlist and Cheezey has given us a taste of all sorts, so I thought I’d head in a slightly different direction again. I just hope you enjoy. Cheers, Techy.

[01] Gustavo Santaolalla – The Wings [Brokeback Mountain soundtrack]
This is a beautiful track, featuring in the moving film Brokeback Mountain. The song is sparse, yet beautiful and sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.

[02] The Cinematic Orchestra – Burnout [Everyday]
A great follow-on to Gustavo Santaolalla. This could also quite easily feature in an atmospheric film.

[03] Thievery Corporation – All That We Perceive [The Richest Man in Babylon]
Thievery Corporation take their influence from all around the globe and are well worth checking out, if you’re looking for something slightly different.

[04] Michael Hutchence – Possibilities [Michael Hutchence]
Great solo effort from the INXS frontman. Released just before his death, this gives an indication of what the future may have held. INXS all grown up.

[05] Mother Love Bone – Chloe Dancer/ Crown Of Thorns [Singles Ost [Soundtrack]]
A very pretty track from the ‘Singles’ OST. Takes me back to my youth and my love for the grunge scene at the time.

[06] Chris Cornell – Billy Jean [Carry On]
A good link to Mother Love Bone. Another grunge pioneer with his band Soundgarden, here Chris Cornell takes a pop classic and roughs it up.

[07] The Beautiful Girls – Blackbird [Learn Yourself]
A band that I discovered in Australia. They were playing live in the venue below our hotel. We went to see them and the rest is history. One from the Jack Johnson school of music – I think Uncle Ravey will enjoy this.

[08] Wojtek Teck Wieckowski – Blues Gonna Catch Ya (from the album Slyde Guitar*)
I know very little about this artist and he doesn’t even feature on Amazon. I do know that he makes pretty good modern blues music, as exhibited here.

*The only download link I can find is this Polish site (translation anyone?) but nowhere to purchase. If anyone knows differently, please leave a comment.

[09] Pink Floyd – Country Song [Zabriskie Point [soundtrack]]
A lesser known Floyd record from the Zabriskie Point soundtrack. A pretty ditty which shows the diversity of this wonderful band. One for Cheezy & Spacey.

[10] Levon Helm – The Mountain [Dirt Farmer]
A beautiful, beautiful song from the ex-frontman of The Band. A lovely mix of Country and Bluegrass, which goes very well with a full bodied red.

[11] I Am Kloot – The Same Deep Water [I Am Kloot]
Fell in love with this track the first time I heard this. I suspect LZ will too.

[12] Elbow – One Day Like This (Live From Abbey Road with the BBC Concert Orchestra)
[The Seldom Seen Kid (Abbey Road Live Edition)]
This band needs little introduction and one of my favourites of recent years. A brilliant song made even better through its live interpretation with an orchestra.

    Techy – great mix . It has a good feel to it and while its a bit too early to pick highlights, I do love ‘The Mountain’ by Levon Helm. A Steve Earle song I believe with such great lyrics;

I was born on this mountain a long long time ago
Before they knocked down the timber and stripped mined all the coal
When you rose up in the morning before it was light
To go down in that dark hole and come back up at night
I was born on this mountain, this mountain’s my home
She holds me and she keeps me from a worry and a woe
Well they took everything she gave, she gave it now she’s gone
But I’ll die on this mountain, this mountain’s my home

I was young on this mountain but now I am old
And I knew every holler, every cool swimmin’ hole
Til a one night I lay down and I woke up to find
That my childhood was over I went back down in the mine

There’s a hole in this mountain it’s dark and it’s deep
And God only knows all the secrets that it keeps
There’s a chill in the air only miners can feel
There’re ghosts in the tunnels that the company sealed

Yep – absolutely right LD – this is a song by Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band, taken from the album of the same name – ‘The Mountain’.

Great, some weird looking stuff that I don’t know. But you are going to have spacepiggy on your case, you’ve stolen one of her tracks!!! Doomy doomy doom!

I have asked a colleague to translate the Wojtek Teck Wieckowski text for us, give it a few days. Meanwhile:

Will wait till I hear your sample tonight then maybe make my first ever purchase on ebay.pl

Great mix Techy. (I just knew it would be.)
3 mixes in & all totally different, Love it. Just skipped through it so far, but i can tell they’ll be some ‘growers’ here.

  5. Laughing Dog says

Hi Cheezy – you’re right some definite growers here.

I had the mix a couple of days before we posted and played it a lot……and I love it …..but the order and flow of the music really shouldn’t work here with 2 slowish instrumentals at the top of the mix followed The Thievery Corporation with another down-beat kinda track that in turn is followed by Michael Hutchence – it really shouldn’t sound so good but is does – it bloody does. And the last 4 tracks are almost seamless.

    Mabruk Techy.

One thing Chris Cornell and ‘Billie Jean’ – a bold choice of track!!! Does it work? To be honest I don’t know………to its credit it a very different version and he does tear it apart and put it back together with gusto………but I can’t really see the point of it.

Last point (honest) – I would love to know how often you would like us to post these Mini Mixes. At the moment we have 9 mixes available to download, with ones from Spacey, LZ and me ready to post (2 from me actually) – plus ones from Spiggy and I believe Spacepiglet almost ready – plus Bert has his Guest Mix ready to go on the 15th Sept.

    Is this too much music?

How many would you like each week? Or…how many days shall we leave between mixes to give you a chance to download and enjoy.

Or can ever have too much music?

    Feedback appreciated

    Techy
I couldn’t have put it better myself !
    No-Really-I couldn’t !
Come on back Laughing Dog.If were going to have a group hug,ive got to be able to imagine that your here.

  7. Technoflid says

As many mixes as you and everyone else can get out there…

They’re really easy and quick to download, but can be re-visited and enjoyed, time and time again in the future

  8. Spacepiglet says

brilliant right up until the last track, it annoys the hell out of me. Not least because its playability increases over the christmas holidays, Sorry but like I say brilliant mellow stuff right up til then
