Jan Satorras is the guitarist and composer behind our Album of the Month ‘Mas Duro Que Jimi Hendrix’. I was lucky enough to chat on-line with him the other day, here’s what happened:
Laughing Dog: Hello Jan and welcome to MFTM. How are you and where are you?
Jan: Hello thank you, I’m on the beach of Life in Almuñecar.
Laughing Dog: I have to say I really enjoyed your new CD Mas Duro Que Jimi Hendrix with Caremelito Fuxia – could you tell me something about it?
Jan: Well it’s normal that you like it it’s great music
Laughing Dog: Where did you make it?
Jan: At home in Barcelona in my studio with old equipment, a Pearl drum kit from the Seventies, amplifiers from the Seventies, cables from the Seventies, pedals from the Seventies, and of course microphones from the Seventies. Although we are not so old, most of us were born in the Seventies so we are also from that era.
Laughing Dog: The guitar work is amazing can you tell me where you get your inspiration?
Jan: Well from meditation chillums and sex.
Laughing Dog: Could you tell us something about your other groups?
Jan: Well I’ve been in a few bands but these are the highlights:
Urban Trapeze a progressive rock band – really good with a style like Camel, Caravan and King Crimson. The drummer we had left because he lives in Colombia so now the band sound a little different but it’s still great music.
Mariachis Fumetas from Andalucia in Almuñecar. With the Mariachis Fumetas we just like to enjoy making good music.
The Gerreros Superconcientes (Superconcious Warriors) Jan Satorras and the Gerreros Superconcientes – the next CD will be with this title and I’ve teamed up with the original drummer from Urban Trapeze Juan Camilo Anzola and the basist from Mariachis Fumetas Mario Pino so with this new CD we have brought together three musicians from great groups to make one amazing group.
There will also be singing and other instruments added but you will hear it shortly hopefully I will have it finished by the end of the summer or by the end of the year at the latest. It will be an amazing album recommended to everyone and for all audiences.
Laughing Dog: Sounds great – who or what inspired you to become a musician and why?
Jan: That would have to be my mother, because when we where children she was always playing music like Pink Floyd and others to get us to sleep, there was always music at home and great music and that was when I decided that yes this is what I wanted to do play music
Laughing Dog: Tell me what do you love most about music?
Jan: Playing it.
Laughing Dog: What are some of your passions outside music?
Jan: It’s great to do nothing sometimes, I also like working and selling on my market stall, sitting on the toilet that’s very important most of my best tracks I have composed sitting on the toilet . A lot of great musicians compose music sitting on the toilet but they never admit it.
Laughing Dog: Tell me what is the hardest thing about being a musician?
Jan: Making money with music is the hardest.
Laughing Dog: What do you love most about being a musician?
Jan: Well, playing music.
Laughing Dog: What is the strangest thing to happen to you on stage?
Jan: Strange, well I don’t know if its strange but most women when they see me playing guitar get really excited and want to have sex with me, the strangest thing is that some of the men do too!
Laughing Dog: Are you going to be doing any gigs in the near future?
Jan: At the moment I haven’t got any gigs planned because I am in Andalucia and I have the band a bit disorganized as they are spread out around Spain. But there may be some around the beginning of next year. At the moment I’m concentrating on the recording and mixing of the new album, once that is finished yes we will be doing concerts and possibly in the UK as well I have a very good manager in England and I have another great manager here in Spain, so between the two of them they’re going to make me famous and of course all our friend will be famous as well and that way we can help each other , that’s the idea anyway.
Laughing Dog: Well Jan, thank you for answering my questions, enjoy the beach and keep playing great music .
