It’s not music that I know a lot about and I don’t have that many albums. But I do know when I hear the sweet soul sound of Curtis, Isaac, Aretha, Stevie et al I know that what I’m hearing is music made in Heaven.
I was listening to Curtis’ album ‘Give It Up’ the other day and was thinking how good is this music?….. and how good would it sound on here and wondered why we haven’t discussed this type of music before. So, not to let a chance to showcase great music go missing I decided to create my Sweet Soul Music – 70′s Style mix with 18 absolute corkers. Of course, I had to have the usual suspects with their classic tunes but I’ve also tried to capture a bit more of that era by putting some not so famous names such as Terry Callier and Minnie Riperton in the mix as well.
But out of the 18 gems on offer here the diamond must be track 6 – Spirit In The Dark (Reprise) with Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin going bonkers. Listen to the band, they are so hot and tight its almost illegal. What a performance, I would have gladly given my left testicle to have watched these guys live – in fact how cool must it have been in Philly, Detroit, New York in the early 70′s with bands and artists like this to watch.
The 70s Sweet Soul Music Mix [a 114 mb zip file] will be available for one month from today – until midnight on 21 September 2010. As always, your thoughts and comments are welcome in the comment box below.
As usual, I hope you enjoy the mix, let me know what you think and of course if you like a track buy the album, there’s some bargains to be had on Amazon.

I think I just died and went to heaven. “18 absolute corkers” doesn’t begin to describe its wonderfulness. Wait ’til UncleRaveDave sees this!
i have to agree LZ absolute corkers brilliant mix
I think this should be an interesting download. I’d be lying if I said that it’s my first choice of music, but I do love artists such as Marlena Shaw and Marvin Gaye on occasion, so reckon there will be some gems here. No doubt a few tracks that would fit well in a BBQ mix… Thanks for another gem LD
Hi Techy – again most welcome. Do me a favour listen to track 6 Ray Charles and Aretha a few times then reply again – the more I hear it it the more I go WOW – just stunning.
Will do LD – Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin should equal magic together!
Have you ever heard the album ‘Genius Loves Company’? Ray Charles recording with his pals before he died basically. Some of the tracks are a bit twee, but ‘Heaven Help Us All’ with BB King is cracking.
Sorry – that should be ‘Sinner’s Prayer’ by Ray Charles & BB
Blow me down with a feather – you’ve only included it in your latest ‘Music For Music Lovers’ mix. Good skills!
You weren’t wrong about Ray & Aretha LD – what a riot!
Techy, that Ray Charles album is now sitting in my Amazon basket as we speak – cheers!
You won’t be disappointed LZ – other highlights include ‘Here We Go Again’, ‘Do I ever Cross Your Mind?’, ‘Fever’ and ‘It Was A Good Year’ – will be interested to see what you think of it.
