The BBC Mixes ~ BBC THREE

BBC THREE Mix
Cover image by the talented Chris Halderman

Hello pop pickers… and welcome to BBC Three.

The last mix in our short triology of all the best from the vaults of the BBC – I’m still amazed and impressed with the quality of these sessions, the BBC should be congratulated.

In the mix we start with some lovely guitar from Dire Straits and Robert Cray and end with two very old tracks from ELO and Floyd. In the middle you get some John Martyn, Yardbirds and a great version of Jeepster from Marc Bolan. You may also notice quite a lot of chatter from the DJ’s which almost transports you back in time, especially with (I think) Johnnie Walker chatting about “popping off to the boozer” with The Yardbirds (classic).

Again, hope you enjoy and please remember if you like the song there’s a very good chance that you’ll love the album, so please buy – I reckon dear old Aunty Beeb could do with the extra funds these days.

Ohh – this looks magic. Thanks LD – another early Xmas present! King Crimson, Floyd, Free, The Yardbirds… what an illustrious list.

There was a double episode on the Bio channel the other night covering Floyd and then Marc Bolan. Bolan had an interesting life indeedy and almost predicted his untimely death.

As for Floyd, the programme only re-iterated that Waters was a genius, but also an egotistical, domineering arsehole who forgot that without the others, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here and The Wall would never have been the masterpieces that they turned out to be.

Hi Techy – glad you like, watch this space for another mix – that is…..kinda different

Got as far as Be Bop Deluxe so far, although only sampling the album sub-conciouslly at the moment, thus far i’d say it starts good builds up to Wishbone Ash then dips before making a suprise return in track 8. Although I admit i’ve never been a Soul man.

Will give it the proper once over later on though

Hi Spacepiglet – and welcome to musicforthemonth.com

Look forward to your feedback – did you like the DJ chatter with the Yardbirds? Very quaint I thought, very proper like.

What you listening to now (apart from BBC Three mix of course)

  5. Spacepig says

Dips!!!! Dips!!! Spacepiglet what are you talking about??? Oh I so dearly hope that you aren’t referring to John Martyn when you say it dips??????

Looking back through the songs before that means it can be only him or Marc Bolan you’re talking about – grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Prepare for some brainwashing of the God of the Guitar and King of Fairyland type.

Best track on here for me? Possibly Colin Blunstone, but then I always liked this song anyway and it is a stonking version of it.

  6. CHEEZEPEEZE says

Spotted your deliberate mistake with King Crimson LD.
    Highlights for me:
    Floyd-Nice & Loooonnnngggg
John Martyn-The man was a flawed genius
    Free-Great band,great song
    Colin Blunstone-Always loved his voice

  7. Laughing Dog says

Well spotted Mr Cheesy – that was going to be my next brain teazer. Find the song that’s not really what it says it is.

Top of the class for you.

  8. Spacepiglet says

Yep Spacepig it was indeed John Martyn if I remember right. Just all a bit ugh… was hard not to skip infact. Still haven’t got round to that full listen unfortunately – busy times, but i’m freshly back online in Dundee so hopefully get a chance in the month of nothing preceding starting Uni up again

  9. Spacepig says

Well this must be a first!! Have any of you ever seen the words John Martyn and ‘ugh’ in the same sentence?
I have a major task on my hands here my dear MFTM devotees. I have already sent Solid Air to the piglet – does anyone have any suggestions of where to take him from here to ensure that there will never again be a repeat of this blasphemy?
