The old Mini Mix had run its course I think, especially with the discovery of the Audiggle software – next month I hope that we’ll decide what we will replace it with. But in the meantime it gives me a chance to share with you three mixes that I’ve been working on for a while – my BBC mixes.
I have over the years collected quite a few CDs related in some way to the BBC. Some from sessions recorded at their Maida Vale studios, some from sessions broadcast live on air, some special ‘in concert’ shows etc. – they all have one thing in common, they are all performed live, sometimes in mono, sometimes acoustic versions but always demonstrating the real talent of the artist and their ability to do it live.
I also love to hear the introductions and comments of the old DJ’s including Johnny Walker and dear old John Peel – in fact whenever I hear John’s simple introduction to track 7 “Ladies and Gentleman – Mogwai” it reminds how good he was and how he knew his role was to simply introduce and let the music do the talking (shame some modern DJ’s didn’t follow his style).
I hope to bring you over the next 10 days 3 mixes – BBC 1 (today’s mix), BBC 2 on the 15th and BBC 3 on the 20th. I hope you will love them as much as I have loved putting them together – you’ll hear an eclectic mix of old and new, from Cream to Gomez to Dusty Springfield and Neil Diamond plus some cover songs that I just couldn’t resist (Alex Harvey).
BBC ONE
[01] Cream – Strange Brew
[02] Fleetwood Mac – Honey Hush
[03] Groundhogs – Garden
[04] Dusty Springfield – (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher
[05] Neil Diamond – I Am I Said
[06] David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust
[07] Mogwai – Hunted By A Freak
[08] Siouxsie & The Banshees – Hong Kong Garden
[09] Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – Rattlesnakes
[10] Gomez – The Way You Do The Things You Do
[11] Led Zeppelin – The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Hair
[12] Barclay James Harvest – Mocking Bird
[13] Nazareth – Hair of the Dog
[14] Robin Trower – Daydream
[15] Alex Harvey Band – Dance To The Music
All in all a rare treat for your ears – enjoy.
The BBC ONE Music Mix [a 114 mb zip file] will be available for one month from today – until midnight on 10 September 2010. Has now expired but there are plenty of great mixes still available!
As always, your thoughts and comments are welcome in the comment box below.
Laughing Dog

I’m loving Gomez more and more each time I hear them, must get myself off to Amazon and order something. Love the Fleetwood Mac track too. And I’m surprised at home much I like the tracks by bands I wouldn’t have crossed the road to get a free cd of – Cream, Alex Harvey Band, etc.
It’s a great mix – obviously I don’t love every track (Led Zeppelin? *shudder*) but even I can see that they flow together beautifully. And I can always take the headphones off when the Zep come on
One thing I noticed long ago about the BBC related CDs. The sound quality is always second to none. So good in fact that many a time I have picked up a BBC release simply because it is a BBC one, even if I don’t particularly like the band it’s by.
Many examples: Steve Hillage stands out even though that CD was stolen from me years ago, the Alex Harvey one is probably his best ever, Hawkwind, Gillan, The Orb, UFO even, all great recordings. Haven’t downloaded the mix yet, but I just know it’s going to be top drawer stuff.
Hi Spacey – agree with 100% and I too have bought not cos I like the band so much but cos its one of Aunty Beebs
Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. I can’t wait to get my mits on this little lot. I’m bristling in anticipation. I agree with Spacey – the sound quality is usually excellent – I have a few ‘Peel Sessions’ – The Orb, Smashing Pumpkins etc and they’re all wonderful….
John Peel – one of my heroes. Just played the music he loved and did so much to help good new bands gain recognition. So many people in the business now could learn a thing or too from him…. ok, I’m gushing now, but you get the picture.
Thanks for this LD – rather inspired of you!
Welcome Techy – I don’t get good ideas very often so when they do come along I’m always pretty chuffed.
BBC 2 is rather spiffing as well

[Pedant alert]
LD, can we refer to them as BBC ONE, BBC TWO and BBC THREE? Then it matches the font I found for the cover art
Just been having a listen – some fantastic tracks here. What a treat. hearing John Peel’s voice again sent shivers up my spine.
Great to hear Mockingbird again LD.
Mogwai-Fantastic track.Another band that’s past me by.Which albums would you recommend? Please don’t say all of them.
Hi Cheezy – I only have 3 albums:
Young Teams – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Young-Team-Mogwai/dp/B000023XD7/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1282065046&sr=1-2
Mr Beast – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mr-Beast-Mogwai/dp/B000E0DJFO/ref=pd_sim_m_h__3
and
BBc Sessions of course – http://www.amazon.co.uk/Government-Commissions-BBC-Sessions-1996-2003/dp/B0006IGIXE/ref=pd_sim_m_h__7
They’re all very good – anybody else have any suggestions? Mogwai are the kind of band (like Gomez maybe) that plod along doing their own thing and if you like this sort of post rock (is that what they are?) then each album is rewarding
Hope this helps
P.S. Agree about Mockingbird – what a great version
