Oliver Mtukudzi (tuku) is one of Zimbabwe’s best musicians , (and one of my favorite guitarists) Born in Highfield in Harare 1952 Tuku did not start his career until 1977 when he joined the band Wagon Wheels there single “Dzandimomotera” reached gold and Tuku released his first album the next year . Throughout the years Tuku has continued to produce great music , 40 albums to date , and has devoted fans across the world , Tuku is also a contributor to the south african group Mahube , and  does concerts regularly in europe.

Trying to find a couple of songs to introduce this great artist has been hard especially as he has so much music and a great variety of sounds , in the end i settled on these two songs from his collection.

Oliver mtukudzi can be bought from amazon either on Cd or mp3 download and i recommend you buy at least one of his albums for your collection .

    Glad you like it

Great stuff Bert, fantastic to hear something really different. I couldn’t help but compare it to the Staff Benda Bilili which Mr D brought to us at the beginning of the year (and again in this month’s mix).
For me anyway, this is ahead by a country mile.

I’m off to Amazon again with the card again I think.

Thanks SP im happy you liked it , i hope URD likes it as well
pesonaly i think that this is very Diferent from The Staff Benda Bilili (had to go back and have a nother listen to the mega mix ) but i can see how you would compare it.
i hope to bring more great musicians from Zimbabwe and beyond as the music is great and africa has a great rythem

Hi Spacey – I don’t think you can compare this guy to Staff Benda Bilili – it’s like trying to compare Rory Gallagher to Alex Lifeson to Eric Clapton – impossible to do and serves no real purpose. It’s best to simply enjoy the music (of both)

I’ve no real knowledge of the history and culture of Zimbabwe or the Democratic Republic of Congo but was is apparent is how both artists have drawn on these factors to make music that is simply uplifting and wonderful – a joy that Bert has kindly shared with us.

I think I came to the comparison simply because African music is so often lumped in together as one style. I agree, it’s not useful or fair and as Bert has said that his intention is to bring us so much more music from this wonderful continent I am going to have to get out of that habit immediately.

Maybe once I have heard a wider variety of this kind of music it will become a bit easier. As it is, at the moment my knowledge of African music is somewhat limited.

If you believed the western music press* there are about a dozen artists that can be conveniently grouped under the “world music” label and the rest ignored. Grrrr. Love this Bert, thanks for sharing. I’d be right behind Spacey at the till with my debit card if I hadn’t bought too much already so I’ve saved this for later in the year. Really great music, can’t stop dancing!
