Knocked out in 1973: just re-awoken in the 21st century and wishes he hadn’t bothered (that’s his name by the way) has started a great new discussion on Amazon.Co.UK called I am on a fast : no buying of music in any format for a month. Comments ?
This started me thinking….could I go without buying a new CD for a month. Well, I have thought for a while that I have loads of music that I haven’t really listened to – great music that I only play once in a blue moon cos I’m always on the look out for new music…why?
I don’t really know, I know that I love the thrill of discovering new music – Sandi Thom and Cyndi Lauper prime examples – but sometimes the chase is better that the catch, and you end up with dross.
So….what do you think? Could you…could we not buy any new music for a month? Or are we all too desparate Dan?

Up until about a year ago, given that challenge, I would have been fairly confident of managing it.
Then the Happy Hound comes along with this website and does nothing but cajole us into parting with the hard earned. And if persuasion isn’t enough then he just demands it instead.
Probably since finding Mr D I have listened to a much wider variety of music than I did before. Which means I have one hell of a lot of catching up to do.
So, the simple answer is – no, well not as long as this site is going anyway.
Strange this thread appears right now. Just yesterday evening, driving home with my normal 75-minute commute (and nothing for musical company except Radio Bahrain & the BBC – our “corporation vehicles” only have a radio and cassette player !!! – but that’s a whole ‘nother thread) … Anyway, just yesterday evening, driving home with my normal 75-minute commute, I was wondering “does Laughing Dog ever actually listen to all this music he keeps collecting ?”. Yep, I seriously was. I mean, where does he even find the time ?
I find, when I chillax, it’s almost always with music I’m most comfortable with. Or, at Geriatrics’ Gym, with music I’m very familiar with. What’s the point in having a collection of, I dunno, 150 000-odd songs if you never listen to them ? Collecting for the sake of collecting ? Occasionally, MTFM rocks my world with a new discovery, but then the local Virgin doesn’t really stock the great stuff that LD delights in bringing to the surface.
So, sadly – very sadly – my answer is, unless/when I travel to a country that offers more than Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, I shall find it very easy not to buy any new music for a month. Oh, wait, sorry – do DVD’s count ? Damn !
Hi Spacey – I know I must sound like a hippo crite – but I think I will fast until AUG 1ST.
If only to give me a chance to catch up on some tunes I’ve not heard in a while (e.g. Marillion as Cheezy just mentioned)
Hi URD – yes you do have a point – “does Laughing Dog ever actually listen to all this music he keeps collecting ?”. Yep, I seriously was. I mean, where does he even find the time ?
I’m lucky that I can play music all day at work via headphones (actually listened to the BBQ mix twice this way) plus I walk a lot with music on. I think this is why I not want to listen to new music for a while – to actually go back and listen to the wonderful stuff I’ve heard the past year.
That’s it, Dawg, take some time out to smell the (Guns ‘n) Roses
