Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers – ‘Mojo’

tom petty
I’m not a big fan of these guys, only ever buying their Anthology, which is of course a great record as it has all their hits and more. But a certain music critic named Andy Gill gave this album 5 stars- which is unusual for him as he rarely promotes old established acts, concentrating more often than not on up-and-coming or relatively unknown artists.

When this guy gives a new album 5 stars I will, more often than not buy it, even though I may not have heard too much about them – rarely am I disappointed. This is the case with ‘Mojo’ the 12th album from Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers as it is a very good album with no weak songs on the album. There are no surprises here, you get what you paid for, 15 classic rock/blues songs played apparently live without any overdubs by a band as tight as a monkeys ……… you know how tight I mean.

It almost made it as my ‘Album of the Month’ but yesterday I heard a new album by a new singer/songwriter that is simply outstanding – can’t wait to share with you on July 1st. Hope you enjoy the sample of Tom.

Like the Dog, “I’m not a big fan of these guys” either.

But. Now. Nope, sorry, still not.

I do quite like the 2nd sample here (“Running”), but unfortunately I eventually get irritated by Tom’s overly nasal style of singing. I doubt I ever could listen to an entire album. Sadly for me though, I really do like the MUSIC on “Running”. Maybe somebody less irritating will cover it one day ? Robert Cray, perhaps ?

Hi URD – as Shirley and Company sang “It’s a shame shame shame” – as its actually a very good album.

Never mind – there’s more where that came from

I went to see Tom Petty many many years ago (anyone remember the Glasgow Apollo? What a cesspit!). There was a local band in support, can’t remember their name or anything, but they were very good.
Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for Tom Petty. I found it far too long and I was bored long before the end. So nothing else for it but to hit the bar. Well of course I spent the rest of the night there accompanied by one rather hospitable young barmaid. Then my friends told me that the last half hour of the gig was stunning. I didn’t care, by that time I had the barmaid’s phone number but that’s another story altogether and not fit for publishing on a family space such as here.

Now where was I? Oh yes, Tom Petty – first song is OKish. Vocals are very Pettyish surprisingly enough. Not quite sure that the drumming works though.

Interesting comment from URD about Robert Cray having a go at the second one. I would like to hear someone like Joe Bonamassa beef it up a bit.

As it is, it’s not going to be top of my Christmas Wishlist.

Mr SP you a bit of an old shagger on the quiet – I’ll show you my pics of Kates Bush if you show me pics of Betty Barmaids pulling action ;-)

Can’t believe all these new songs I’m hearing on here today and I’ve only been away for a couple of weeks – like these two will prob buy tonight thanks MR LD

Hi Sinny you can’t say shagger on here can you?

I’ve never really thought of Spacey in these terms but I think we need to see photographic evidence here from both of you – don’t you?

    Glad you like TP

Well that may be a bit difficult guys. I don’t think that cameras were invented in the days my story was set.

How about if draw you a picture instead?

And Mr D, I am glad to hear that you have never thought of me on those kind of terms, but I was once young too you know. Quite a long time ago granted, but I do have vague recollections of it every now and again during my maudlin moments.
