Music Mix 11 ~ June 2010

The June 2010 music mix cover is a grainy photo of a faded pair of tan sneakers, the laces undone. They sit on a cracked, linoleum floor.

The lovely album cover image is entitled Old Shoes by Jose Fares.

Notes for the June music mix
Remember to respect copyright law; if you like a song from the mix, there’s a very good chance you will also like the album – so do me and the artist a favour and buy the CD.

robert calvert album cover[01] Robert Calvert – Ground Control to Pilot [Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters]
“Largactil…Check”….”Valium..Check”…”Glass of Water”

Thought I’d make the start of this month’s mix a little bit different – and you don’t get much different than this guy.

Sometime vocalist and poet with Hawkwind – a real character if ever there was one who made an album about an American jet fighter plane. The album (you hear 3 tracks here) includes Lemmy, Dave Brock, Nik Turner and even Brian Eno – produced by Roy Thomas Baker it holds many memories for me (can still remember being totally bamboozled by it).

AC DC Iron Man 2 cover[02] AC/DC – Highway to Hell and [03] Cold Hearted Man [Iron Man 2]
From the soundtrack to the new Iron Man film which is just great. So nice to see a new younger audience hearing such a great band – beats Pop Idol every time.

oli brown cover[04] Oli Brown – Keeping My Options Open [Heads I Win Tails You Lose ]
Citing Stevie Ray Vaughn as a major influence this young British guitarist is another guy we should keep an eye on. Very talented, very fluid, very very very good.

little feat cover[05] Little Feat – Spanish Moon [Feats Don't Fail Me Now ]
Lowell George must be one of rock’s lost stars, a genius songwriter and guitarist who sadly left us in 1979. This guy had it all – the looks, the voice, the talent, the producer – listen to how this song changes mood and tempo – leaves me breathless every time.

Did you know – the song “Ride Like The Wind” on the 1979 self-titled album by Christopher Cross was dedicated to Lowell George?

Well the night that was high, we got into town
Was the night that the rain, it froze on the ground
Down the street I heard such a sorrowful tune
Comin’ from the place they call the Spanish Moon
Well I stepped inside, and stood by the door
While a dark-eyed girl sang, and played the guitar
Hookers, and hustlers, filled up the room
I heard about this place they call the Spanish Moon
One false step, you get done in
It’s a cold situation
If that — that don’t — kill you soon
The women will down at the Spanish Moon
I pawned my watch, and I sold my ring
Just to hear that girl singing, (hear that girl sing)
Don’t take long, to wake up ruined
The women will down at the Spanish Moon

The Who Greatest Hits cover[06] The Who – Who Are You [Greatest Hits & More]
Great band of course, great live version and still going strong after all these years. But the reason I’ve included this into the mix is that I seem to be more and more finding myself in meetings and thinking “Who are you – who the F**K are you”. Being able to mentally sing this song helps me through the day and stops me head-butting some A-Hole.

karnivool cover[07] Karnivool – New Day [Sound Awake]
Karnivool is a five-piece alternative rock/progressive Metal music group from Perth Western Australia, formed in 1997. At times they can be a wee bit EMOish but I’ll forgive that for songs like this as Ian Kenny the driving force and lead singist appears to know how to deliver a good tune – It’s a New Day.

Wolfmother[08] Wolfmother – Vagabond [(500) Days of Summer]
From the OST to (500) Days of Summer, a film my youngest pup loves and ’tis she who recommended me to add to the mix. I have tried and failed with Wolfmother, too predictable, too much like every other rock band. Think I may give them a second chance as I just love this song – it’s beefy.

[09] Motorpsycho – Starhammer; [10] X-3 (Knuckelheads In Space) / The Getaway Special; [11] Close Your Eyes [Heavy Metal Fruit ]
See my album of the month for more info – but this has to be a contender for album of the year. It has everything an old dawg could wish for – perfect. Please excuse the extremely long intro to Starhammer.

Field Music (Measure) cover[12] Field Music – Each Time Is a New Time [Field Music (Measure)]
One of the few songs on a mix that I don’t recommend you buy the album – which is a shame as I like these guys and loved their last album Tones of Town. The song is great, the album is way too long, lacks focus, lacks good tunes, lacks anything that makes me want to say “mmm I like this”. Except this song which is good and sounds particularly good in the mix.

mgmt[13] MGMT – Siberian Breaks [Congratulations]
Interesting reviews about this album – no common ground – people either love it or hate it. Me I like it in small doses. Again I don’t recommend purchase of album (unless someone can make me see change my mind) but this song is so different to anything they have done before, bet the record company shat themselves on hearing the demo.

robert calvert album cover[14] Robert Calvert – The Widow Maker [Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters]
Second track from my 3-not-in-a-row – which sounds more like Hawkwind than Hawkwind do – my favourite song on the album. Listen to the bass.

Ronnie James Dio 3-in-a-row:
One of my favourite singers and possessor of a golden set of vocal chords. The man was small (around 5ft and a fart in high heeled boots) but he knew how to sing – did this guy know how to sing. Sadly missed.

stand up and shout[15] Elf – I’m Coming Back for You [Stand Up and Shout: The Dio Anthology]

black sabbath[16] Black Sabbath – Turn up The Night [Mob Rules]

Rainbow[17] Rainbow – Man on The Silver Mountain [The Very Best of Rainbow]

arthur russell[18] Arthur Russell – Keeping Up [The World of Arthur Russell]
Charles Arthur Russell, Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, singer, and disco artist. While he found the most success in dance music, Russell’s career bridged New York’s downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne. Why is this song in the mix? Why – because I like it.

joshua radin[19] Joshua Radin – I’d Rather Be With You [Simple Times]
I know what you may be thinking ‘yet another singer/songwriter – who needs them?’. True I suppose, but what I’m hearing here is good stuff – great voice, simple melody, nice lyrics –what’s wrong with that?

Sitting here, on this lonely dock
Watch the rain play on the ocean top
All the things I feel I need to say
I can’t explain in any other way

I need to be bold
Need to jump in the cold water
Need to grow older with a girl like you
Finally see you are naturally
The one to make it so easy
When you show me the truth
Yeah, I’d rather be with you
Say you want the same thing too

Now here’s the sun, come to dry the rain
Warm my shoulders and relieve my pain
You’re the one thing that I’m missing here
With you beside me I no longer fear

I need to be bold
Need to jump in the cold water
Need to grow older with a girl like you
Finally see you are naturally
The one to make it so easy
When you show me the truth
Yeah, I’d rather be with you
Say you want the same thing too

I could have saved so much time for us
Had I seen the way to get to where I am today
You waited on me for so long
So now, listen to me say:

I need to be bold
Need to jump in the cold water
Need to grow older with a girl like you
Finally see you are naturally
The one to make it so easy
When you show me the truth
Yeah, I’d rather be with you
Say you want the same thing too
Say you feel the way I do

world party[20] World Party – Vanity Fair [Egyptology]
Heard this and the next tune when shuffling on my iPod and they sounded soooooooooooo good together that I couldn’t resist adding them to my mix.

World Party is Karl Wallinger and Karl Wallinger is World Party – a very talented guy with an ear for a good tune. Did you know he wrote She’s the One (Robbie Wiliams) and played with The Waterboys on A Pagan Place and This Is the Sea? Just love the feel to this song, the deep bass and the way the brass kicks in – feel like I’m at Caesar’s Palace, LA – High kick – High Kick – Twist and Turn – and smile.

gomez[21] Gomez – Step Inside [Five Men in a Hut]
Words cannot do this band justice – all I hope is that a 100 years from now a hyperdigitalsolanoidtvchannel will show a documentary on the best music of the 21st century and include Gomez.

the national trust[22] The National Trust – Making Love (In The Natural Light) [Dekkagar]
This is from their MySpace page and kinda sums up the song – an amazing song but haven’t a clue what’s going on.

Really, what makes you sing? Is it the stroke of your heart as your lovely rejoins you in the cool sheets after turning back the clocks for falls assent? Is it the glimmer you see in your baby’s (mind’s) eye when you pledge eternal devotion? Is it mingling fingers with that lovely as you both reach for the last praline? Is it the rice? Is it the oats? The sweet and salty on your lips?

Whisper to the Trust what it is that makes you sing. They’ll start the parade. Take down the black top to their lemony Jag and come float aboard. As you settle in and make yourself comfy, you hear the pops of the bass drop while a hand smoothes the lambskin under your slippers. All the castanets and light-skinned coffees You are the King and Queen of their Petting Parade (Zoo?). It’s always been about you. And you. No harm will fall upon you.

Love can only happen where two are. Trust can only happen where you are. Your taffeta crown is so blue. You’re radiant in the navel orange cloudless clime.

They want you there when they go, honey. With your arms, legs wrapped round so tight the density drifts sweetly over the antennas of our Emerald Trust city.

Trust creates the cinnamon persuasion. Trust in mirrors because its often you. fashions the pulse of your soul. You pine for
Trust in the dung and din of totaled hearts. You’ve always wanted to
ditch the rusty sides of waste
yourself
in your old town. Now wish your Trust a sweet life and commence with the move. With a simple twist of Trust the blinds open and your map’s revealed.

Yes, Trust makes it squeezes better. With every (thrust and parry?) octave pop and subterranean thump the cockles strike five its five clock in your heart and soon every conclusion comes electric, each slight (sticky) caress brings a new fancy. testament to your infinity.

Trust makes us who we are wide awake, (pony tail) aching, left leg shaking, dying to escape the (s)corn of and dreaming of never ending stories to better approach beauty. Each knob All knobs agog on twist scripts the whatever future history of what matters. What little we knew before these sounds serves well to what we now have.

Trust has new work for you BE occupied by sounds. Move your rocks, carry your water.
BE the animal never resting. BE the one not bothered by the invisible half-truths, gossip and jean shorts. Spill your milk and cry joyously arms akimbo in near absolute fertility. and the mysteries of money, sex, magic. Near absolute fertility.

The broth is stirred, ready and sweating.

It’s Alright Trust (We’re only sighing).

robert calvert album cover[23] Robert Calvert – Catch A Falling Starfighter [Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters]
The National Trust were supposed to end this month’s mix – but then Captain Lockheed had other plans.

They just don’t write lyrics like this no more:

Catch a falling starfighter
Put it in the pocket of your jeans
You can use it as a cigarette lighter
Or as an opener for a can of beans
Catch a falling starfighter
Shine it up and wear it on a chain
You will find that it will be much brighter
If you empty out it’s cockpit down the drain
If you empty out it’s cockpit down the drain

I focused the magnifying glass
That brought the downfall of Icarus.
Balloons were easy; a simple pin;
Or a knife in the case of the zeppelin.
That blade was the cause of many a prang
In the early days of stick and string.
I am the gremlin.
I was there.
Making mischief in the air
And always will be wherever man
Flies in the face of Creation’s plan.

Is it just me, or do I detect a certain lack of variety this month? Don’t get me wrong, I would never be the one to complain about three Robert Calvert tracks. But with another 3 from Dio, 2 from AC/DC, and then the odd ones from The Who, Wolfmother, Gomez and Motorpsycho, isn’t the guitar led music a bit to the fore this month?

Oh oh, now I’m going to be accused of complaining, maybe best idea is to listen to the mix first then come back and bitch a bit!

  2. Sin again says

Hey Mr SP – u a hard man to please sometimes been listening to the mix all day and u right about lots of guitar stuff but its bloody good stuff. I’m off to see Iron Man tonight cant wait

  3. Liefste zus says

Are you all sitting down? Good, then I’ll say that I sort of agree with Spacey. Gasp! A lot of it is the sort of music I had to endure growing up in the same little terraced house with the Dog and whilst I don’t hate it, I can’t say I’ve ever warmed to it.

But I’m really happy about that because there’s just one “must buy” album in this mix rather than the usual 5 or 6 – phew! And to be honest, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to keep up with all the good music he’s already put me on to so a “light month” so to speak is one heck of a relief.

Sinny, have a great time at Iron Man tonight!

  4. Laughing Dog says

LZ – Let me guess the one album is Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters, am I right?

  5. Liefste zus says

Oh how right WRONG you are!

  6. Laughing Dog says

Dear Sinny – thanks for your support, glad to see there’s someone on this site with some sort of taste in music.

You will love Iron Man – let us know tomorrow what you think of film and soundtrack. I’m guessing it will remind you of your trip to New York last year.

  7. Spacepig says

I’m guessing it’s the Motorpsycho one for LZ. It’s appeared on my Wishlist anyhow. Birthday next Wednesday, any takers?

I could be wrong, but isn’t the Iron Man soundtrack just an AC/DC compilation? Should be a funny enough film though, get plenty of beers in.

  8. Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey – yes you are correct Iron Man is just AC/DC doing what they do best. ’tis a good film.

Why not post your Hawkwind play list next Wednesday (9th) to celebrate your birthday – the best day to wind people up.

I hope Mrs. SP reads this site as you will love Heavy Metal Fruit

  9. strap the jock says

    Iron Man = Fab Film

Junes Music Mix = 70% fab – not sure what’s going on inside the head of Calvert and not sure I want to know. Plus there’s too many old geezers for me. But you almost saved it with Gomez.

  10. Spacepig says

Mr Strappy, not even Calvert knew what was going on inside his own head. And what we have here is some of his more mainstream output. Wait till you hear some of his really weird stuff. I’ll try and get some posted in my sty if I can work out how to do it.

I thought the Karnivool one was quite good, even though I don’t usually like metal. I had never heard of these guys so it’s a good find.

  11. Liefste zus says

Karnivool is metal? Can I wear my “I like (a little bit of) metal” badge now please? :-)

  12. Spacepig says

I just listened to Karnivool again just to be sure, and I think we can class it as psychadelicspaceprogmetalbabbleshite music. There’s definitely metal elements in there, but maybe not in the same league as the likes of Mastodon or Cannibal Corpse, so that has to be a good thing. Yes I think you can dig out your “I like (a little bit of) metal” badge now.

  13. Technoflid says

The MGMT song is bonkers – I love it! Quite unlike anything else they’ve done. I bought their first album, but didn’t bother with the second, as thought it would be more of the same….

  14. Laughing Dog says

Hi Techy – I would love to hear your opinion of this album as I just don’t get it. Beware though, apart from ‘Siberian Breaks’ there was not much else I could recommend – if you have the time write a review for us and I’ll post it.

  15. Technoflid says

    Hi LD

I haven’t got the 2nd album, as thought it would be more of the same from their first release.
I didn’t mind the first album, but it’s one of those that is best divided up into individual tunes and as part of a summery/ BBQ play-lists. Listening to the whole thing through gets a little repetitive…

  16. Spacepig says

To our new friends, I just thought a little bit of an introduction was in order. You may or may not have noticed, but for each month’s mix I like to give a little bit of feedback on each song. Not everyone (well Ken anyway) likes this approach and would rather that the mix is referred to as a whole rather than a dissection of the individual parts. To him and other’s of the same mind, I say tough sh** – that’s the way I listen to my music. If you don’t like it, ignore me, I won’t mind.
The problem I have had this month is all down to time. Well come on, the footie is on constantly isn’t it? So now I find myself in the position of having my monthly mutterings to do as well as having a go at the mini mix (which I haven’t even listened to yet), and also knocking together my best 5 finds since August for the birthday mix.
So I better get cracking, and I am going to have to keep it relatively short this month (that should please Ken at least).

Robert Calvert – Ground Control to Pilot: I think the Dog has been on the space dust this month (yahoo!!). Nothing wrong with a bit of weirdness to kick off with. Really though, and I have said it time and time again, this song does make some kind of sense when you know the full album. Wait a minute – that’s got to be a bad thing, what’s wrong with being totally bamboozled?

AC/DC – Highway to Hell / Cold Hearted Man: I don’t know how far apart these songs were recorded. Could be 30+ years, could have been 10 minutes for all the difference in them. I’m not saying they’re not good enough rocking tracks, but I used to think that Staus Quo were the only band that could make every song sound identical. Now, unfortunately, I have to put AC/DC alongside them. Why don’t they try something different for a change? OK, they seem to have found a successful formula, but it doesn’t half make for some boring listening.

Oli Brown – Keeping My Options Open: Mr D has mentioned this dude a few times in the passing – think he must be employed to do his PR. But he does seem worth keeping an eye on. Nothing really outstanding, but a competent enough performance. Think he has some way to go to be mentioned in the same breath as SRV, but he could just get there eventually.

Little Feat – Spanish Moon: sadly ignored on this site for far too long, Little Feat, on their day really are something to behold – and this is them at the top of their game. They had the incredible ability to change genres repeatedly over the course of a single song , as you can hear on this one. Haven’t played this CD for ages, gonna have to give it another spin sometime (if the football ever finishes).

The Who – Who Are You: A bit of classic stomp & roll. Only problem is, it’s such a good beer drinking song that I’m feeling a bit dry now. Never did see this band live, don’t suppose I ever will now, but I bet they would have brilliant in concert. Going by the live ones I have, it must have been quite some experience.

Karnivool – New Day: Quite a weird song from a band I know absolutely nothing about – I like it! The Dog says it’s a bit EMOish, which means I finally get the chance to show my ignorance. Just what the hell is EMO??? I never did get that one, I suppose that’s what comes from being a grumpy old man. Whatever it is, it sounds good to me. Changes pace quite regularly but somehow gets away with it with ease. I could listen to quite a bit more of this band happily enough.

Wolfmother – Vagabond: I don’t know why, but I was expecting gut wrenching heavy metal from this lot, think I must have been thinking of another band. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. They probably are capable of that kind of nonsense, but for the most part this is just simple bouncy, summertime music. Can’t say that I want to explore much further though.

Motorpsycho – Starhammer / X-3 (Knuckelheads In Space) / The Getaway Special / Close Your Eyes: Has to be the find of the decade so far. Unluckily for me, by the time Mr D had pointed me in the direction of it, Mrs SP already had bought my birthday presents so it wasn’t to be. So now I have no option but to sneakily buy it without her knowing. Problem is, I just know that once I get it it’s going to be stuck to the CD player for a long, long time to come so she’s going to start asking questions anyway.
I could go on and on about these tracks all day long, but I won’t, instead I will just simply say that I love every note, every thud of that amazing drumming, the singer’s voice, the sheer enthusiasm squeezed out of every second of these tracks, and the others posted elsewhere. Psychadelicspaceprogmetalbabbleshite music at it’s very very best. This is now top of the To Buy list, and in all likelihood it will stay there until it falls through my letterbox.

Field Music – Each Time Is a New Time: For me anyway, it’s going to be impossible to match the last few tracks, at least this one brings us down reasonably gently. It’s not very exciting, and I can well believe the mutt when he says its the best one on their CD, but I didn’t find it irritating in any way. I think (probably wrongly) that they are trying to focus on the guitar work, but in all honesty, it’s not really that special.

MGMT – Siberian Breaks: yet another band I have just never got around to listening to. Not quite what I expected, probably a bit better than I thought they would be, I hear sorta 60′s flower power psychedlia in there somewhere so that has to be a good thing as well. I also noticed that the song really began developing the longer it went on, possibly showing potential for future releases if they decide to go along these lines. Quite like it, I would have to hear more though before committing myself to them.

Robert Calvert – The Widow Maker: Oh oh, the dog has been on the happy stuff again! Hawkwind in all but name, and there’s nothing wrong with that in my own opinion. Dontcha just lurv the sax work on this one?

Elf – I’m Coming Back for You: A classic example of why I never really liked Dio. Boring, turgid, cliched. Could be any one of a million second rate rock bands. I think that it’s one his earlier songs, although I could be wrong. It sure doesn’t do anything for me I’m afraid.

Black Sabbath – Turn up The Night: believe it or not, this was the last 7″ single I ever bought. purely as a taster for the new album (Mob Rules) you understand. Guess what – it put me off buying the LP. I did eventually get it, then wished I hadn’t bothered. This is NOT Black Sabbath, let’s get that straight for a start. It’s not even a patch on Heaven and Hell. This instead, was Dio’s attempt at getting himself a decent backing band. Bill Ward seen through that one and cleared off. So with only half the band there how can they call themselves Black Sabbath? Garbage!!!!

Rainbow – Man on The Silver Mountain: But there is light in the Dio camp. With Blackmore calling the shots, Dio was given the chance to show what he could do. And on this song he does admirably, but why not give us Stargazer, now that really is Dio at the top of his game!

Arthur Russell – Keeping Up: Never heard of, but what an interesting little ditty. Might seem to be a strange sentiment coming from an aging Psychadelicspaceprogmetalbabbleshite music freak, but there’s just something about this song that makes you want to smile – I Like it.

Joshua Radin – I’d Rather Be With You: Far too similar to any of the plethora of singer/songwriters we have had on here for my liking. Oh I know that LZ and URD will probably go for it, can’t really blame them, it does seem competent enough. It’s just that they have begun sounding exactly the same as each other to my ears. Maybe I just need a bit of education, but I always hated school so I’m not going to volunteer for it.

World Party – Vanity Fair: Maybe his stuff with The Waterboys beats this track, but it is still quite listenable nevertheless. I am going to have to hear it in the context of the album, but I believe it probably works rather well in that setting. One to explore later on when time allows.

Gomez – Step Inside: Yahoo, my favourite early 21st century band are back, cheers Mr D. of course I have this one already, along with practically everything they have ever done, but don’t they work well in any mix? How can they be so laid back, yet rocking the house at the same time? Just simply, consistently great music, what more can we ask for? Years and years ago I worked for a short while in a bingo hall. One time I played their first CD during a break in proceedings. I had a queue of grannies and housewives demanding to know what I had been playing. Universal appeal or what??

The National Trust – Making Love: What a strange little track! I didn’t know what to make of it on first listen so I had to go back and try again. Then again and again, and before I knew it I had decided it is really quite something else. And at the price it is going for on Amazon marketplace, it would just be rude to pass it by, so it’s on its way to me. Does anyone know what genre we should be applying this one to? Does anyone really care? This is certainly a lazy summer day song, so all we need now is summer.

Robert Calvert – Catch A Falling Starfighter: Yup, Mr D has lost the plot – join the club. Not quite sure why you have gone OTT for Calvert this month, I don’t suppose you really need a reason do you? Why not finish off the mix with some totally nonsensical lyrics?

So there we have it, it’s just the kind of thing I do to amuse my friends out there. Feel free to rip me to bits, cast me into a fiery pit, get the spit ready, whatever takes your fancy – I don’t mind, I’ve had it all before.
Highlights this month – goes without saying – Motorpsycho in places 1,2 and 3. But Karnivool also very good.
Usually I manage to come across a few that I haven’t heard before that I can totally shred. Surprisingly, this month that is reserved for one I do know. Take a bow Mr Dio!!

  17. UncleRaveDave says

    ‘Spig ! Love your work.

  18. Spacepig says

Well thanks Unca RD, but this isn’t work, this is purely for pleasure.

Believe you me, you sure as hell wouldn’t like to come across my real work!!!

  19. Laughing Dog says

Spacy Spacey Spacey – get into that fiery pit before I cast thee a thousand curses. AC/DC mentioned in the same sentence as Status Quo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Songs recorded about a year apart (1978/79) and sound as good today as they did then.

Spacy Spacey Spacey – get into that fiery pit before I cast thee a thousand curses. Ronnie James Dio was a good good man and these 3 tracks surely demonstrate the might of his voice and his talent for a tune (well lyrics).

A rumble of thunder, I’m suddenly under your spell
No rhyme or reason, or time of the season, but oh well
The darkened deliver, I shake and I shiver down your soul
You know what to cover, I think for another it’s a story told
So get a good hold, yeah

Regiment fooled you, you thought that you knew who you are
A simple equation, that’s the relation, but that’s gone too far
A time of suspicion, a special condition that we all know
    So let it all go!

    Turn up the night!
    Turn up the night!
Turn up the night, it feels so right!

Definitely feels so right – how can you not be banging your head to this – Spacey Spacey Spacey

I thought my Calvert bit sounded rather good all jumbled up especially the intro – then straight into Highway to Hell – my eldest pup thought this kool – so it must be right? I wonder what the other guys thought about these songs? So many memories for me – you too I suspect.

The rest we’re OK – so glad you like Motorpyscho – had you mind when I heard it first. Do me a favour play track 4 on Mays Mini Mix its 20 minuites 42 seconds long and tell me if you like

  20. Spacepig says

Ow, wow, yikes it’s hot down here. can I come out now or are the eggs not quite ready yet?

OK – I admit it, I deserved a bit of a prodding for mentioning AC/DC in the same sentence as that other lot. But in my defense I didn’t say that they sounded like them. I actually quite liked AC/DC at one time. I just got bored when all their songs started sounding the same. Well I remember the anticipation waiting for Back in Black to come out. And it was worth the wait, I still think it’s a really good album. But that was their last good (different) one, and that was 30 years ago!
Now, even their new one sounds exactly the same as the songs you posted here. Progressive they ain’t that’s for sure.

As for Dio – I have no doubt whatsoever that he was a good man. To still be rocking when he finally went to the great gig in the sky is an achievement in its own. It’s just that at times I found him highly irritating. The Dio stuff I could live with. At least anyone who came along knew what they were getting. But to hijack probably the greatest hard rock band of all time the way he did was unforgivable. Heaven and Hell I am going to excuse. Not only are there a few good enough songs on it, but he also still had three quarters of Sabbath for that one. After that, he joins me in the fiery pit. Possibly redeemed himself towards the end a bit when they were renamed, but the previous sacrilege was just a step too far.
Oh, and as for the head banging bit – maybe 25 or 30 years ago. Nowadays I have to take care of the few brain cells I have left so it’s more like gentle trotter tapping (unless Faust are playing of course).

And if the pups think Calvert mixed through the mix is cool, who are we to argue?

Gonna have to go back to last month’s mix to find that track. I have a sneaky suspicion that you’ve put Gullible’s Travails in there – sure hope so. It’ll be later tonight before I find out though, the footie’s just coming on again.

Before I go, I have to add that I have found another few goodies to pop into the sty. You and Che at least are going to love these ones!!
