June 10 Album of the Month – Motorpyscho ‘Heavy Metal Fruit’

motorpyscho

This is already a strong contender for my album of the year as it contains everything I could wish for in music. Strong songs, magical melodies, great guitar and some good old fashioned rock riffs. I read somewhere that Motorpyscho had pop sensibilities? Whatever that means they certainly ain’t a boy band – more your honest, hard-working Norwegian rock band that just keep on doing what they do cos they do it good.

The three tracks on this month’s mix demonstrate what I mean but its track 4 from May’s Mini Mix that really showcases their talent. The track is Gullible’s Travails (pt I – IV) by…. yes Motorpycho – how did you miss this gem. The best track on the album and probably their best song.

Definitely a winner and recommended to you all but especially if you like Siena Root, Colour Haze etc.

    Hi LD
Awesome band.Just played the tracks on your June mix,& your favorite track isn’t
even there! (it must be good) I’ve got to get this!

Hi Cheezepeeze – glad you like. Watch out for an album review to be posted on here soon of Betty Steeles, very different but very good.

Just to let you know I’ve included Destiny by Zero 7, The Sea by Morcheeba and Cayman Islands by Kings Of Convenience in the BBQ mix which I’ve cut down to only 9 hours now – some fantastic songs on there.

Also, I’m thinking of having a competition along with the mix where I’ll include 3 tracks with no info (probably 3 interludes) and whoever guesses the 3 wins a hard copy CD of all the tracks plus a 20 quid Amazon voucher – what you think?

Also, will post track listings for Mays Mini Mix on weekend

Hi LD- 3 out of 4 bands in your BBQ mix.I’m honored!
Great tracks choice too, (Takes me to a beach somewhere, walking through the surf
with a smile on my face.)
I’d be happy just to win your BBQ cd. Spend the £20 yourself on my 3 cd suggestions!
Glad your post, posting the Mini Mixes track listings.it makes sense for those of us who can’t guess them all. When does the June Mini Mix come out?
I love finding ‘new music’ Have recently discovered-
Porcupine Tree (thats going to be expensive!)
The Groundhogs (Earley 70s,past me by completely)
The Flower Kings (Swedish Prog) Picked it up in a charity shop, just because i liked the cover.
I must have 750 cds,not to mention tapes & vinyl. Yet looking through your archives,
theres loads of singers/bands that i havn’t heard of.
So good for you Laughing Dog! Entertainment &education!

Wow you’ve just discovered Porky Tree Mr Che? Hope you have an understanding bank manager. Are you going to let us in on how you discovered them and what you’ve heard yet?

The Groundhogs seem to have been around forever, seen them many times. And, they have a habit of playing in the most strange and obscure places, still going yet so depending on where you live you have a reasonable chance of catching them live. Not to be missed, just make sure you have easy access to the bar though, it tends to get a bit hot and sweaty when they play. I could recommend many of their albums, but totally necessary is Thank Christ for the Bomb.

The Flower Kings are another good one, but I don’t know them too well, all I have is a couple of live ones. But when the mood takes you, they really are top class.

And you’ve come to the right place to discover new music. I thought that both me and the Happy Hound were both well informed, seems like every week however, we keep on finding new bands to investigate. Hope you are going to throw in a few suggestions too.

Back to Mr D’s competition. Having had a look at some of the suggestions on here and on Amazon, I know I have absolutely zero chance of winning this. Never mind, I’ll have a go anyway, and the hard copy of the CD would do me too, it’s not as if I need an Amazon voucher (I’m sure Mr D and Sinny will work that one out).
So, instead, I suggest that you use the 20 quid to get in a few more beers! (and maybe an extra burger for Sinny).

Hi Mr Che – you sound like me (i used to love to browse charity shops and record fairs) and have bought some stonkers just cos I liked the album cover (some dross as well mind). I don’t know much about Groundhogs or The Flower Kings, but can see that Spacey recommends so they must worth investigating – thanks to you both.

Like you I love discovering new music but sometimes I feel that I should listen to my old stuff more see an old post on here for more info – be interesting to hear what you think.

With regards to Porky Tree – Spacey’s right, it may become expensive and I will leave it to him to guide you on which album to buy – me I think their latest album ‘The Incident’ takes some beating but I know Spacey prefers their older stuff.

  6. Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey – thanks for recommendations for The Groundhogs will see if I can buy the weekend.

The competition will be (I think) to guess not 3 tracks that have been suggested but 3 interludes – you know those short tracks between songs that sometimes annoy sometimes enhance an album – the 3 interludes could come from anywhere. But they will test you.

I think Sinny may need the extra burger (and beer) especially if he moves to Libya

  7. Spacepig says

Speaking of the Porky Tree, guess what I was handed before Mrs SP left for work this morning?

None other than their new DVD, Anesthetize! Oh happy day, I’ll do a review of it sometime when I get the chance.

Now let’s see what’s waiting when I get home.

  12. CHEEZEPEEZE says

By the way.Your clocks 2 hours fast!

  13. Spacepig says

Good start with the Groundhogs ones Che, you can’t go far wrong there. Sooner or later though you are also going to need some of the live ones. I can heartily recommend Live at Leeds. It was recorded when they opened for the Rolling Stones, I think at a Uni gig. I haven’t heard the Stones set, but by all accounts the Groundhogs blew them off the stage that night. Only problem is, as the opening act, it’s quite a short set. so you will also need the Marquee live one. This is a full set, and it can be picked up for pennies on the Zon marketplace.

I think you’ll probably find that once you have the PT CDs you have mentioned, all you will want to do is get the rest of them (and there are quite a few). You haven’t even mentioned my fav one yet, Coma Divine, but then I have always had a thing for live CDs. Also worth getting a hold of is Warszawa. And if you like a good old space out occasionally then Metanoia is the one for you. Then, once you have that together you can start thinking about the side projects: Blackfield, No Man, Steven Wilson’s solo one. You have one long adventure ahead of you.

I seen Nektar a few times, always in Germany where they have a big following. Think I have most of their albums, but for some reason they really don’t get played as much as they should do. Mrs SP is German and I have spent quite a bit of time over there, mostly at festivals, etc. Nektar are really quite big over there so it was inevitable I would come across them sooner or later.

I have listened to Prog for most of my (long) life, although I do like to tune into loads of different music (as long as it is out there somewhere with very little chance of finding its way back). Another couple of suggestions for you to try out: Grobschnitt (especially Solar Music), Beardfish, Space Debris (wait a minute, you’ve very little chance of finding them, I’ll try and get some posted), Quantum Fantay (ditto).

Then once we’ve flogged the Prog for a while, we can move onto my favourite – total freak out weirdo music, or as Mr D so subtly puts it, psychadelicspaceprogmetalbabbleshite music. The fun is only just beginning!!

Hello Cheezepeeze and a big welcome! It’s lovely to see you settling in so well but be warned – this site can be a serious drain on your finances. My Amazon basket is bulging with all the recommendations of the past few months!

If you have any techy questions feel free to post them here or if you’d prefer, I can email you (at the tiscali address you use for comments, not displayed here of course) and you can reply to me.

Oh and there’s also the contact page to email the dog directly. He can always pass questions on to me.

As for the clock setting, the dog lives in the Middle East so the time stamp is set to his local time not for us in Blighty :-)

  15. Liefste zus says

Talking of Amazon spending, Is no-one wanting that £20 Amazon voucher? Because I know a good home it can go to. Shame I’ve not a hope in hell of guessing the [expletive deleted] answers!

  16. Laughing Dog says

Hi Che – Gomez must be one the most underrated bands ever, please buy Five Men In A Hut tis a grand album.

With regards to previous mixes contact LZ – she’s great in explaining how to do stuff on here in a way that even I can understand. I’m not sure why you can’t get the mixes onto your ipod. I’m a bit of a simpleton but when I burn a CD or download something I open it in itunes then just highlight the songs and move across to the ipod. Speak with Dear Sis she’ll be more than happy to help
