Don’t Buy The National High Violet album

angry dog
Why? Because even though I have been doing my very best to promote the album and increase sales by telling visitors to this site (5,611 since last August) that its a good album and telling 5,611 people with cash in their pockets that they may wish to BUY IT – I get this email:

Hi Laughing Dog,

On behalf of Beggars, 4AD and The National, we would kindly ask you not to post copies of “High Violet” on your site (or any non-preview tracks from the newly released album by The National).

We do appreciate that you are fans of / are promoting The National, but the labels and artist would greatly appreciate your co-operation in removing your links to the pirate files in question.

Thank you for respecting the artist’s wishes and, if you / your readers want good quality, non-pirated, preview tracks, then a full length, high quality version of “BloodBuzz Ohio” is available for fans and bloggers to link to / post / host etc from http://www.highviolet.com/thenational_bloodbuzzohio.mp3 and “Afraid of Everyone” is now also available from http://www.soundcloud.com/ninasles/afraid-of-everyone-the-national … .. for further details of the new album, on-line promotions, videos and 2010 shows, check-out the official site, as well as the band’s MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/thenational and YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/beggars … .. and keep an eye on these official sources for details of further news, preview material and on-line promotions. Last, but not least, check out pitchfork.com/tv/ for the “Castle Rock Sessions” featuring live versions of tracks off “High Violet”.

With Thanks & Regards,

WEB SHERIFF

Well well well, you seem to have Beggars/4AD running scared of you already, well done. Seems a bit unusual that you’re giving them free publicity, but they still want to cut you out. I for one have definitely listened to a lot more tracks that you have supplied (and bought a lot more CDs on the strength of them) than I ever did from any record label’s website. Maybe it’s just that they think they can get by well enough on their own and don’t need any help to swell their coffers – best of luck to them (not).

So, to show my solidarity, I have now unsubscribed from the 4AD mailing list, and told them in no uncertain terms exactly why I have taken this step. I also informed them that I won’t be buying any more of their products. Just as well that Brendan Perry has defected to Cooking Vinyl isn’t it?

Just one more thing – can I suggest that you don’t throw your copy of the CD in the bin? Instead shove it on Ebay. That way at least one more person won’t be buying it from them and they then lose another few bucks.

Hi Spacey – thanks for your support. A pig and a dog against the MIGHTY record company – they don’t stand a chance.

Its all about the ‘C’ word (I am not referring to them as a bunch of c*****) although they probably are – I’m referring to the ‘C’ for CONTROL. Something that record companies cherish and desire more than sales. They can’t let an ordinary music fan decide what track to sample, they can’t let an ordinary music fan give his/her opinion – it all must be CONTROLLED.

It was remember only a sample, and a positive review, nothing that could be downloaded, it was advertising the album for them and they still would not let go of the CONTROL – pretty sad actually.

Think I’ll post the whole album as a playlist – that should really p*ss ‘em off ;-)

Oh don’t let them bother you Mr D, they’re really not worth. There’s plenty other bands, record labels who will appreciate your comments, they’re not worth getting upset about.

And whatever you do, don’t post the album, even though it would wind them up, I’m sure you have plenty of gems for us without that one lurking around. Anyway, you’ve binned the CD haven’t you?

Hey Mr LD and SP who’d want to mess with a psycho pig and an angry dog not me for sure. But these sounds kinda serious as I’ve heard these guys can close down websites but I think they target sites that play the big names like Prince, Franz Ferdinand and as you play and review mostly bands that noone has heard of you may be ok – lets hope so as I would miss the dog and pig (and LZ and URD of course)

Spacepig is right, my Amazon basket is bulging with albums I’ve bought, plan to buy as a result of listening to tracks here on MFTM and as a forty-mumble year old who had stopped listening to/buying music, that’s quite a feat. You’ve gotten me excited about new discoveries again, something the record industry failed to do. Spectactularly, I may add.

p.s. To be fair, I think it’s a nicely worded takedown notice, just kind of pointless because they’ve now pissed off quire a few people unnecessarily imho. Oh well. Plenty more fish music to discover via mftm!

I’m putting this here, because it’s the thread with the most recent postings, so I reckon a few people might still be visiting. LD, I think we need we need a new Discussion Topic like “New Releases”, where us devotees can post news of CDs/DVDs that we’ve stumbled upon. Like this one:
    http://www.channel24.co.za/Music/AlbumReviews/Katie-Melua-The-House-20100525

Liefste Zus, did you see my recent posting on “Serendipitous Moments” (specially for you) ?

  8. Liefste zus says

The Nibs Van Der Spuy concert schedule listing in your Serendipitous post? Oh yes indeed, I have now, thank you for the pointer. We should all make a habit of checking the “Recent Comments” listing there in the sidebar.

The New Releases topic is a great idea, let’s see what the dog has to say (and I’ll have a think about how best to implement). Could be a feed in the sidebar. Hmm.

p.s. The Van der Spuy and Plumbline tracks from the Serendipitous post are definitely my most played in May. This year probably. Absolutely love them, thank you for sharing. Am now itching to get the whole albums when finances allow.

  10. Laughing Dog says

Hi URD – why not use ‘Now This Is Music’ for posting news of CDs/DVDs that we’ve stumbled upon – that’s what I do

  11. Liefste zus says

Oh you mean write a short post each time in the Now this is music category? That’s a good idea!

  12. UncleRaveDave says

I sorta figured the “Now This Is Music” thread was for music that the writer thought was “wow, this is MY kinda music”; I would post, say, a rare Eric Clapton or Buddy Guy track that meant a lot to me personally. But what if I happened upon, for example, a new Hawkwind documentary on DVD ? Would I say “this is music !” I dunno, maybe I would. But, if I wouldn’t, I’d still like to be able to bring it to the attention of a more appreciative audience. Just a thought; use it, don’t use it …
