[A guest post by Liefste zus]
So election fever is sweeping the UK at the moment. Wait… fever? More like a sniffle actually. I think only the journalists are interested in this one. Folks I talk to are of the mind that no matter who you vote for, the government still gets in. But as I was coming back from the daily mutt walk along the Downs this morning I wondered if I’d even be able to vote (most of the village have not received voting cards*) so I had the bright idea to put an election mix together to console myself. But! I don’t own many any of the tracks listed so it’s more of a YouTube compilation. Anyway, let’s crack on.
[01] Gordon is a moron – Jilted John
It’s not a sign of my political leanings that track #1 was the very first to make it on the list – the Dog and I are from the Welsh valleys – a labour stronghold if ever there was one – and descendants of labour politicians – but it’s just too good a song to pass up. And it brings back memories of the summer of 1978 when I was a very young child okay, a young teen.
I’m awarding bonus points too because I had no idea until today that “Jilted John” was an early incarnation of Graham David Fellows, later to become Yamaha maestro John Shuttleworth.
[02] David – Nellie McKay
Unlike certain American “news” stations, we here at musicforthemonth aim to be fair and balanced at all times so here’s a song about David. But not Cameron.
[03] Nick’s Song – Dannielle Wallace
And one about Nick. But not Clegg. If you can ignore the awful guitar, this is quite a sweet song.
[04] None of the Above – Beltaines Fire
A dilemna facing many at the voting hall tomorrow, I suspect.
[05] One Cat, One Vote, One Beer – Ry Cooder
[06] I Wanna Grow Up To Be A Politician – Roger McGuinn
[08] Another bloody election – Killing Joke
[09] Electioneering – Radiohead
[10] Won’t get fooled again – The Who
I suppose it’s quite fitting to end at “Number 10″ but there are plenty more songs that fill the bill – so now all we need is a few more suggestions from you guys please!
* The postie brought letters from the local council with details on how to vote if you haven’t been sent a card. Phew.
Thanks sis – some good songs here – why didn’t The Tories have Jilted John as their spokesman and the song as their theme tune?
I’m a bit late getting in on this one, and as I don’t live in the UK any longer the farce that is the election doesn’t affect me. But I do remember very well what they are like over there so how about:
Thin Lizzy – Don’t Believe A Word
Power Corruption and Lies – New Order (yes I know it’s an album and not a song but it just fits in so well)
Unfinished Monkey Business – Ian Brown
Vote for the Fake – Adrenalized
You may have guessed, I don’t have much faith in any UK politician so I dedicate them all to everyone who ever even considered standing for Parliament.
