April Mini Mix 2010

The April mini music mix cover is a warm, colourful image of a man and woman dressed in medieval clothes, standing in a cornfield. They're both wearing rather odd masks with large rubber noses. I think.

The wonderful album cover image is entitled Summer Dance by alicepopkorn.

As 2010 s whizz by we’re almost a quarter of the way through the first year of the decade and it’s time to wend our way to the April 2010 Mini Mix.

So what’s been blasting through my earphones this past month? As is now customary for the mini mix, no track info is supplied, it’s up to you guys to hit the play button, sit back and enjoy. Then come back and share your thoughts in the comment box.

For me, far and away, the best mix yet ! This one, I can see finding itself onto my MP4 player for a good chillax with a bottle of the best red round a one-man barbecue. I bow down at the feet of the master.

Wow – thanks DRU – your comments are much appreciated. Glad you’re enjoying the mix – just finished May’s main mix and I actually think it’s better probably the best mix I have ever done….watch this space.

I’ve asked Spacey for him to do a playlist of Hawkwind – why don’t you do one for Clapton or for Blues Guitarist. You chose, email me the list and I’ll post as a special mix.

  3. Spacepig says

Oh oh Mr D, I don’t seem to have got that message from you asking for the Hawkwind list. But of course it would be my pleasure. Just a few questions: How many, how long and how freaked out?

  4. Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey – this is my reply under the Robert Calvert videos

    Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey – 200 Hawkwind CD’s – man you are amazing. I will always have a soft for them – one of my proudest moments as a Dad was when my pups saw them live at last years Greenman festival and were blown away with how good they were.

They are truly an amazing band

Here’s a challenge for you – why not put together a playlist of all your favourite Hawkwind tracks, say around 20 tracks from them and all their offspring Calvert, Hawklords, Nik Turner etc. etc. anybody you want. Then I’ll post as a special music mix. It would be great if you could write some notes for each track as well but if there’s no time then just the music will be grand. One more thing I have loads of Hawkwind as well but when you email me you 20 tracks give me say another 6 or so that I can substitute if I haven’t got what you put in your playlist.

This must surely be a labour of love for you

  5. Laughing Dog says

Also Ken, Sinny, Strappy, LZ or any other readers that would like to post a playlist of their favorite band or genre let me know

  6. Laughing Dog says

Raveydaveyuncle – do you recognize any tracks in the mix?

  7. Sin again says

Hey Mr LD thanks for offer but I’m happy just listening to the playlists maybe in the future

BTW – I like Aprils Mini Mix not sure I agree with URD that its the best but its still very good.

Is 1st song Carly Simon from her new album? last song is Journey I think its the only 1 I do know ;-(
    Must listen again!

    LD @ 18/04/2010 06h28:

    Yes.

  9. Spacepig says

Ah right Mr D, got you (I can be a bit slow at times). I did read that post then forgot all about it – doh!

I’ll get cracking on this one right away, may take a bit of time though, there’s quite a bit to get through.

  10. Sin again says

Hey Mr LD. RaveyUncleDavey or whatever you call him maybe right after all enjoying the mix now after listening to it more plus I reckon track 3 is White Stripes, Track 8 is Skunk Anansie and track 9 Bon Jovi how cool am I

  11. Spacepig says

We also have Rory Gallagher and Pink Floyd in there, which should make it one of the best mixes but nothing which includes Bon Jovi can be considered for that honour.

  12. Laughing Dog says

OOOOh Spacey you’re a hard man to please.

I know Bon Jovi can be seen as all hair and teeth and commercial hits but they can actually write some good stuff. “These Days’ (the album this song is taken from) is a good album plus they are one of the best bands live – they filled the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and really put on a great show.

Spacey – going back to last months Mini Mix you still haven’t told me who track 11 is……you’re going kick yourself or better still get Mrs SP to do it for you.

  13. Spacepig says

Well, I think that whether or not Bon Jovi write some good stuff is open to debate. If they do (which I doubt) then I certainly haven’t heard it yet. And please, don’t anyone mention Living on a Prayer.
As for putting on a good show – what exactly do you mean there? I don’t really like the present day Iron Maiden (give me Paul Di Anno’s version any time) but I can accept that they pull out all the stops to make a live gig a memorable experience. Same with Rammstein, but unfortunately Mrs SP is determined that we go to see them sometime soon (cringe). Somehow I doubt that Bon Jovi could come anything close to either of those. I am prepared to be proved wrong of course, there’s a challenge for you!

I think we agreed at some time in the dim and distant past that selling out large venues was no indicator of talent didn’t we, or did I just imagine that one? I seen Dr Feelgood play to 30 people once, The Groundhogs to 15 and Nik Turner to about 50. Does that mean that they are all crap?

I’ll have to go back and listen to track 11 again when I get home tonight. Could have been that I was going through a dim day when I last played it.

Oh, and some more Skunk Anansie wouldn’t go amiss, I hear that they have reformed, any news on that one anyone?

Can I just mention as the lone female around these ‘ere parts (at least, the only one commenting), the first I’d ever heard of Jon Bon Jovi was as an actor in Ally McBeal. Be still my beating heart!

I didn’t rush out and buy any of his music so for once, Spacey and I are in total agreement. Did I say that out loud…?

  15. Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey, isn’t music a wonderful thing – it has the power to divide opinion, the power to bring people closer together, the power to make you cry, the power to make you laugh and the power to drop the knickers of your loved one.

My friends here on MFTM (you are friends now) all have different likes and dislikes; you and me are close on many things (Hawkwind, our hatred of Gobshitte Twins to name but two) but we are also divided by our different taste in music. I feel I like more commercial stuff (if that’s the right word) while you on the other hand hate this and love music by Faust, Gong, Guru etc – I, no matter how hard I try cannot listen to more than 10 minutes of Faust without pressing stop.

It’s the same with our other friends here – URD loves the blues, old knuckledusting blues by old men wearing polka dot shirts and cowboy hats. Me, I can listen to one or two tracks then it my mind wanders as to what I’m going have for my tea. Same for Sinny, LZ even Mr. Happy with his love of bespectacled guitarists and gay icons.

What is so rewarding for me is that we are care about the music – we all know what we like, but generally we will all give each other the space and respect to enjoy our music – for this I will be eternally grateful.

Back to Bon Jovi – its commercial, its AOR, its made a fortune for many people, its made me happy. Richie Sambora is a not a bad guitarist, Jono (who makes LZ’s heart go a flutter) is a great front man who does what he does very well. The concert in Cardiff was excellent – I did not mean to imply that by simply playing to 50,000 people makes you good – if they had been playing the Labour Club in Merthyr they would still have been good – though I reckon Jono would have had a Gurnos Kiss at the end of the night. I can’t prove to you that BJ are better than Rammstein or Iron Maiden or any of the other bands you mention above – I don’t expect you really need this.

I have no news on Skunk Anansie but would love, like you, to hear more of them.

…..and talking of songs that have the power to drop the knickers of your loved one – Living on A Prayer does it every time :-)

  16. Laughing Dog says

LZ – say it loud and say it proud……..but please don’t say it too often

  17. Laughing Dog says

Spacey and other friends – I almost forgot, May’s Music Mix will be posted very soon probably this weekend to enable you to enjoy whilst on your hols in Turkey.

Hope the skies are clear for you

  18. UncleRaveDave says
