March Mini Mix 2010

The March mini music mix cover is a photograph of a wooden artist's doll folded uncomfortably, captured under a glass tumbler.

And so we come to the March 2010 Mini Mix. Spring is sprung, lambs they are a-gambolling… well they might well be but I’ve barely seen the outside of my office for what seems like weeks now so music has been an almost constant companion as I toil away and dream of a long summer vacation in France.

So what have I been listening to? Well once again the mini mix is wrapped up to contain no identifying information* . I suspect from previous mini mixes that you all rather enjoy the guessing game so go on, download, press play, sit back and enjoy. And let us know what you think in the comment box. Cheers.

* Apart from one track that may or may not give its game away I wanted to use the vastly superior live rather than the album version. And what’s one little spoiler amongst friends, eh?

Download this month's music-mix

The March Mini Music Mix [a 113mb zip file] will be available for one month from today – until midnight on 15 April 2010.

As always, please support the artists – if you like a track, go buy the album!

Enjoy

my first mini mix and I’m luving it. I reckon I’m going need the names of this here playlist.

Can I hear a bit of Bowie in the middle? and what are the Fuck Buttons doing here on the 2nd track? Sounds cool mixed in with ELO

  2. Sin again says

Hey Mr Strappy Dappy, I dont think Mr LD will show the playlist as he wants us to try and guess the bands and song names sumthing that I’m not very good at :-(
especially this month as I dont have a clue

Come on guys only 2 comments – don’t you like the Mini Mix?

    There are some great songs in there – especially track 3, 4, 11, 12, 5, 9, 2, 1, 8, 11…..and you must hear track 14…….just sublime

  4. Spacepig says

1 & 2: ELO2? I knew they existed but hadn’t heard them. I thought they would be too much like ELO, how wrong I was.
The violin playing is awesome, reminds me of a lot of Curved Air. Some very clever construction going on too, similar in a lot of ways to ELP. Great stuff, gonna have to buy.

    3. Walter Trout or Joe Bonamassa? I think it’s Bonamassa but I can’t be 100% certain. Good though whatever it is.

    4. What a silly song! I think whoever wrote it must have spent some time with Viz magazine. Catchy though.

    5. Ha I know this one alright. Played it just the other day. I won’t give Mr D’s game away yet, see if anyone else knows it. Great guitar work on here.

    6. It’s Bowie alright, Mr Strapped One. But I don’t know the song. Not really a huge Bowie fan although some his earlier work is quite good. Seen him many years ago but I wasn’t all that impressed. Would liked to have seen him during the Ziggy Stardust years.

    7. Don’t have a clue what it is but it appears to be another of those sleepy time songs. OK in its own way but not really very exciting is it?

    8. Again, don’t have a clue what it is but this one sounds really good. I seem to recognise the yodel type sound, but I can’t remember where from.

    9. Very very good whatever it is. Love that sort of Afro beat going on in the background.

    10. Blind Melon again, you’re really into them just now aren’t you Mr D?

    11. I’m going to make a guess at Sparklehorse or one of those type bands. Highly listenable, those lazy vocals work well.

    12. Sounds a bit like Donovan of all people. I know its not him, but the way his voice sort of trembles at the end of each line just reminds me of him.

    13. Someone trying to copy Prince? Why bother, he was never any good in the first place.

And unfortunately, for me there was no track 14!

Good mix, ELO 2 was a revelation and once you tell me what track 9 is the card will be hammered again.

Hi Spacey – thanks for comments.

OK track 1 is ‘From the Sun to the World’ from ELO BBC Sessions CD 1, a much better version and longer (3 mins) than the original album version. Track 2 as Strappy rightly identifies is the Fuck Buttons ‘Olympians’ but it just blends so seamlessly with ELO even though there must 40 years apart in time that you would think that it was the same band.

    3. Track 2 – Its ‘Broke Down On The Brazos’ by Gov’t Mule from their latest album ‘By a Thread’ (Billiy Gibbon on guitar)

More to come on this discussion – but have a listen again to track 12 as its you who introduced to me to this guy

    Now I gotta go

  6. Laughing Dog says

Hi Spacey – carrying on with our discussion of the mini mix

track 4 – Electric Six ‘Naked Pictures’ one from my youngest pups collection – you’re right about Viz

Track 5 – you’re right I think but won’t disclose incase Ken, Sinny, Strappy or URD would like a guess

Track 6 – Strappy’s right David Bowie ‘Sweet Thing’ from Diamond Dogs – his best album I think……….wait Let’s Dance is good too

Track 7 – The opening track from ‘Scar’ by one of my favourites Joe Henry. The track is ‘Richard Pryor Addresses a Tearful Nation’ great sax.

Track 8 – I’d be surprised if you have heard of this guys. The song is ‘Mchiki Cha’ by Mapstation – I can’t even remember where I heard it – good song though

Track 9 – Eye for an Eye by Unkle great song, great album with guest appearances by Jarvis Cocker, Josh Homme, Brian Eno, Ian Brown, Massive Attack’s Robert del Naja plus a sample of Ozzy in the opening track. If you like Massive Attack you’ll love this. Also recommend Psyence Fiction though its a wee bit more hip-hopish and not quite as good.

Track 10 – Correct Blind Melon and ‘No rain’

Track 11 – The wonderful Yo La Tengo and ‘Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1)’ such a great song from their Electr-O-Pura album – you’re right about the lazy vocals, this is the only album I have of these guys……..doh too much music….too many bands to like…….not enough time or money

Track 12 – You do know who this is – he’s one of your favourite singer/songwriters from the ’60s/’70s…..you gonna kick yourself when I tell you

Track 13 – Interesting that you should say he sounds like Prince because he’s actually nothing like Prince (except for this song) – its Ryan Adams that gloomy doomy Yank with a talent for writing simple sad songs that can make your heart bleed. This song is ‘Hotel Chelsea Nights’ from ‘Love is Hell part 2′ a great album of melancholia to rival Tindersticks. If ever your heart gets shattered into tiny little pieces listen to this

Thanks for feedback Spacey – glad you like. I’ve just finished Aprils mini mix and just road testing – its bloody good, looking forwards to sharing with you soon
