Anvil – Metal on Metal

Anvil

Just watched the documentary (Anvil: The Story Of Anvil) – just great. Never been a fan of the band but you have to admire their balls, their guts and their determination to carry on when many mortal souls would have quit.

Of course its kinda depressing and parts of the film reflect this (many would call these guys sad old gits) but there’s something about Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner, the two original band members, that make you want you to shake their hands and say “keep on doing what you do – cos you do it good”.

Hey Mr LD you are right I have seen this movie and its fab but so sad in parts. I love the way they show their spirit and how they always look on the bright side, for example they tour Europe make no money play to 15 people in a bar but Lips is still upbeat and says something like “It wasn’t a good tour we made no money but at least we toured” hows that for spunk!!! :-)

I just can’t make up my mind whether to watch this movie or not. Oh I have been told that it is really good: funny, moving, inspirational, all the adjectives that you can think of, and I have no doubt that it’s all of those and more.

But – and here’s the problem. I have vague memories of seeing them way way back then (early ’80′s) as support to, if I remember correctly, the classic Motorhead line up. And for what they were, they were good. The only song I distinctly remember was Metal on Metal, and that was fantastic (didn’t sound anything like this version though).

I kind of get the feeling however, that they should either have progressed and made a serious attempt at being relevant or just given up gracefully when interest waned. Instead they have become a joke and it’s almost embarrassing to admit that at one time you listened to them keenly.

I can’t decide whether to watch the movie, then slink away without ever admitting to anything or maybe if it’s best just to leave the movie out and remember them as the semi powerhouse they were in the days of my youth.
