Fuck Buttons – Olympians

Fuck Buttons

Well I was having a quiet night… but my youngest pup brought home this CD and started playing this MF of a song. We are all now up and dancing and shouting and jigging and doing stupid things with the goldfish.

me thinks its time for bed

I have no doubt whatsoever that this one will go down a storm with the chemically induced young ‘uns at the likes of Glasto’ or T in the Park. It’s noisy, trancey, electronica for the new generation.

It’s not aimed at a (nearly) middle aged rock and blues fan and therefore I don’t consider myself qualified to judge it. I’m not going to say that it’s a poor track, because it’s not. All I will say is that I can’t think of where and when I can see myself listening to it ever again.

And leave the poor little goldfish alone!!!

Hi Spacey – I’m (nearly) middle aged rock and blues fan too and I love it love it love it

Goldfish are fine – one has a bit of a headache though

URD is not only a Blues man. I do like my “doof-doof” and trance too – hence my moniker Uncle RAVE Dave. But this tune (It’s not exactly a “song”, LD) sounds like a record that keeps skipping. Possibly with someone using the beat to play a series of chords as accompaniment on a cheap synthesiser. For me, not for listening to, so much as having Certain Fun with. ’nuff said.

Fortunately, though, it somehow has reminded me of Jean-Michel Jarre’s Equinoxe 5, so I’m off to listen to that. And Oxygene 4. And Chants Magnetiques 2. And Calypso 1. And and and ….

Btw, LD, I do like the way you embed your discussion songs directly into the site. Quick and oh-so-easy to listen to. You do realise you have the advantage over us lesser mortals, who have to rely on Youtube links to share our musical likes ? Or am I missing a trick ?

In similar vein, is there an easy way to keep track of new comments across the multitude of threads ? Personally, I try to keep a tally of the comments in the discussions which interest me, and click on those discussions when I see the tally has increased. But it is getting more difficult as the number of threads grows, and the older discussions are easily overlooked.

Suggestion: would it be possible to include, in similar vein to your “Popular Discussions” list, a list of “Latest Comments” or “Latest Postings” ?

AND (I can see I’m getting on a roll here), is there a way to indicate what comments in a thread, I am replying to or commenting on (like your reply to my Ry Cooder comment, which caused some confusion) ? Maybe auto-assign a number to each new comment in a thread, so that another commentator can start with eg. (“re Comment 28…”).

AND (I promise I’ll end with this) maybe reverse the order of the comments, so that the latest comments appear first ? The longer threads, with 40 or so comments, take some scrolling to get to the latest input. Of course, a new reader would have to scroll to the bottom and have to start scrolling UPWARDS to read the full thread, which has its own disadvantages, so I’m not totally sure of the usefulness of this suggestion myself even.

Sorry, don’t mean to be critical here; LOVE your site and all the work you put into it. Moderate out all my “criticisms” or leave them in for further discussion, as you like.

And now, finally, I’m off to my JMJ. Hard to believe he’s been around since 1976 !

Dear URD – thanks for feedback I have been thinking the same myself for a while now.

Lets see what my blog technician web designer can do over the next few days but we have planned to open up access to all our regular contributors so that they can post comments, music etc. in much the same way as I do.

Thanks again and watch this space

BTW – Fuck Buttons – Olympians is simply a stunning song, the album is not as good but there’s something about this song that draws me in, keeps me in, then slaps me across the head several times with a wet hammour – loving it loving like it

We’re definitely all thinking along the same lines here – if I can snatch a few minutes out of The Dog’s busy schedule over the coming week, we’ll have a brainstorm and I’ll get designing and coding. The keyword in all of our discussions has been community, dragging you lot in even more ;-)

Many thanks for posting these ideas UncleRaveDave, feel free to add more to the discussion as the changes take place!

  7. Liefste zus says

p.s. I’m knee deep in building 2 other sites and renovating 3 more so it ain’t gonna happen overnight!

  8. Liefste zus says

Me again. Do any of you use a feed reader? Because you can get all posts and/or comments straight to your feed soon after they’re published.

If anyone wants a mini tutorial on how to subscribe, leave a comment and I’ll write some notes.

    LZ (@ 01/03/10 12:11 am), yes PLEASE !

  10. Liefste zus says

URD: Your wish is my command! Question #1: do you use Gmail?

  11. UncleRaveDave says

LZ, nope, I don’t think I have a gmail address. But I do have a coupla hotmail addresses. If gmail is a precursor to feed reading (whatever that is), I don’t think it’s much of a process to get a gmail address ?

  12. Liefste zus says

URD, apologies for taking so long to reply, things are a bit hectic over here but here are a few notes to start the discussion. (If you find that I’m stating the obvious at any point, it’s not because I think you won’t know/find them but more as a reference for other folk that might read this!)

You’re right, it’s very easy to sign up for a gmail email account (http://gmail.com) but of course, that’s yet another email to check daily so another option might be to use a desktop application.

I don’t use Google Reader to keep track of feeds, instead I use an open-source (free!) desktop application called FeedReader: http://www.feedreader.com/ . But of course, being tied to one machine doesn’t suit everyone, hence my suggestion for Google Reader.

The other option which I’ve not tried yet but sounds appealing is a new service called Blogtrottr (http://blogtrottr.com/). They say:

“Blogtrottr is a nifty little app designed to deliver updates from all of your favourite RSS feeds directly to your inbox, giving you the flexibility to stay updated whilst on the go.”

I’ve just signed up for this to the email I use daily but haven’t yet received a feed email because of course, we need Laughing Dog to post again. As soon as he posts, I’ll get an email with a link to click to go read.

Hmm, I’m not so keen on this option because I follow multiple feeds and I sure as shit ain’t typing them all in one at a time and then having to read a new email for every post of every feed! So it’s good for someone who follows a small handful of feeds (e.g. MFTM, BBC, NY Times).

So back to Google Reader. I would have written a quick tutorial but of course this is teh interwebs and many, many people have done just that already so here are a few good ones:

    What is RSS?
    http://rss.softwaregarden.com/aboutrss.html

    How to use Google Reader:
    http://www.andywibbels.com/flash/google_reader.htm
    http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_5132_use-google-reader.html

Hope that’s enough to get you started – which option you choose kind of depends on how many feeds you want to follow and how many locations you want to follow them from. If you just use a single computer and plan on subscribing to quite a few feeds then go for a FeedReader (the best, imho); if you prefer the flexibility of being able to check feeds from anywhere, then Google Reader would be better.

This little missive might generate more questions than answers – feel free to hit me with ‘em!

  13. UncleRaveDave says

LZ, thanks so much for your comprehensive response to my feed problem. I’ve just downloaded Feedreader, and it seems to work a treat. Who knew it could be so easy ? I hope that the other members/reviewers/readers (what the hell ARE we ?) make use of the application as well. That is, if they still can access this page to read your reply – QTel has barred access a few times for me based, I suppose, on the F**K Buttons header. Dunno why, but they let me through this time. Anyhow, thanks again for making my life a li’l easier. Mwah !

  14. Spacepig says

Am I the only one who lost the gist of this conversation around about the beginning of LZ’s mention of blogtrottr?

Call me a total technophobe if you want to (everyone else does) but I think I’ll just wait till Junior is here to do it for me.

Is there such a thing as the Idiots Guide to interpreting LZ talk?

  15. Laughing Dog says

UncleRaveDave, yay! Am so glad it’s working for you!

Spacepig, since I class myself as something of an idiot, this should be the perfect Idiot’s Guide to Idiot speak… ;-)
