An old school friend (we’ll call him the Red Baron) has loved the Stranglers since he was knee high to a nun.
He says – “Just listening to the new single by the Stranglers `Retro Rockets` Sheer class!! Check it out on their web site `Rats Lair`. For all those that appreciate REAL music the download is available on 22 Feb so if you like it make a statement and bang it into the charts and help to flush the unmitigated shite that proliferates on the airwaves these days down the pan where it belongs !”
I will be downloading to show my support – the song also sounds really good and although I was never a big Stranglers fan, I can appreciate what they have achieved and its so good to see bands like this still making music.
agreed the best band ever, download the song, the revolution starts now…..
Hey Mr LD tell the Red Baron I’ll be downloading the single and buying the album. I used to be a big fan of the band saw them live several times one of the best bands of the last 40 years no doubt.

Let’s get them that hit!
Like Mr SA, I also seen The Stranglers a couple of times. First time way back then, late ’70′s or early ’80′s can’t quite remember when. Next time wasn’t until 2002 and quite honestly they had changed beyond recognition by then. Oh they were still playing the same songs more or less, but the energy, and excitement was nowhere to be seen.
I have listened to the clip on the link above and, whilst I agree that it has more going for it than most of the usual chart fodder, and it is good to see them still making new music after all this time, I won’t be downloading it or running off to see them on their tour. I know it appears unfair to attempt to compare them to their classic line up, but quite frankly, this track just doesn’t move me at all. I think I would prefer just to remember them from their earlier line up as when I seen them in 2002 I was in no fit state to comment on how good they actually were.
As for attempting to manipulate the charts and buying the download to drive out the drivel: makes no difference to me, I never listen to or pay any attention whatsoever to the charts anyway.
So, whilst I do wish them luck and really hope they go on to further success, I’m afraid they’ll be doing it without me along for the ride.
Hi Jim – welcome to musicforthemonth.com
I’m with you all the way – even though I don’t follow the charts in any shape or form I did download Rage Against The Machine just before Xmas as its a great song plus I wanted to p*ss Cowell off.
Tell me – whats your favorite Stranglers album?
Hi Riknblack – welcome to musicforthemonth.com
Same question for you – whats your favorite Stranglers album?
Black and White is my favourite, especially the Black Side
Their last album, Suite 16, is a cracker well worth getting.
Hey Mr. LD – your bedroom looks really full today lots of new guys nice one
Rattus Norvegicus has got to be my fav Stranglers album followed by No More Heroes I have also 1 live album & a greatest hits which I played last night but their all good
Sinny’s right, it’s getting crowded in here – I’ll be bringing round a try of tea and biscuits in a minute!
Hi Bearcage – welcome to musicforthemonth.com
Thanks for your recommendation – if I was to buy one album would it be this album or one of the other albums mentioned here?
I think I need to buy some more music from these guys!
Hi Spacey – I think you’re missing the point here. I’m sure my friend, The Red Baron, and the other contributors here feel the same as you and don’t give a toss about the charts and the shite that makes it to Top of the Pops. What they are trying to achieve is, I think two things:
1. To make people aware of bands like The Stranglers so that they can actually listen to the music, then make their own mind up whether they like them or not. Then of course if they do like, they will buy the single, buy the album, buy the back catalogue, see them live, explore other similar bands, tell their friends, change channels when the X Factor comes on TV etc. – exactly like we used to
2. Send a message to the people that control music that there are still bands that make good honest music not the pre-packaged crap I sometimes see and hear. And there is still a music-loving public that loves the old bands – bands like The Stranglers, Siena Root, Rage Against The Machine etc. etc. etc. etc.
For this I will gladly download the single and tell everyone I know to do the same too.
Hey Mr LD you are soooo right I cant wait to download the single and support a good honest band the fact that its the Stranglers makes it good for me as I’m a fan but I did the same for RATM at Xmas.
Mr SP you should do the same
Oh all right then you guys have convinced me. To keep everyone happy I will download the single, and who knows, I may even buy the album when it comes out. But if it lurks in a hidden corner of my hard drive gathering cobwebs and feeling lonely and unloved then I’m holding you two responsible!
Favourite Stranglers album? Probably Rattus Norvegicus for Peaches. Or maybe No More Heroes for Bring on the Nubiles. Then again, The Meninblack is just such a weird album that it probably gets the most plays in Spacepig home.
Hey Mr SP I think I love you………………………………. lets get the Stranglers to no. 1
Hey hey steady on old boy, can’t we just be friends?????
Note to all concerned – What is this sudden infatuation with aging punksters The Stranglers? What is going on with my fellow music lovers on musicforthemonth have we suddenly all gone stupid. Why are you supporting a band who have never really been that original, have never really recorded anything of value and who, in my opinion were just in the right time at the right place with the right management.
I have disliked them from the very minute I saw them live in some sleazy pub in London and recognized that they were only it in for the money for what they could get for themselves, jumping on the punk bandwagon. This was sometime around 1976 when they could hardly play a musical note and could only be described as crude, ugly and boring – I see that not much has changed with the new single.
I will not be buying this record.
Aha – a voice of reason at last!!! Whilst I maybe wouldn’t be quite as harsh as Ken, I sure do see where he’s coming from. I never seen them quite as early as Ken, and by the time I did see them they had learned a note or two. But I do agree that they aren’t particularly original and apart from most of the songs mentioned above, nothing is really memorable.
But, having said that, I still think it’s good to see them still going and having won Mr SA’s devotion, I will stick by my pledge to get the download when it’s released. I’m not going to promise to play it much though!
Hey Mr. LD I see Mr Happy is off again – why does Ken hate everyone and everything?
Is Ken Paul Simonon?
The Stranglers? Hardly play a musical note ………….balderdash dear sir!
Hi JJ – and welcome to musicforthemonth.com
Thanks for your comments – we have a nickname for Ken here (Mr. Happy) as he can be a wee bit critical at times but we’re amongst friends so I’m open to everyone’s opinion – even if I don’t agree with it.
I’m not a big Stranglers fan but was playing “No More Heroes” the other day and enjoyed – whats you’re favourite album by the Men in Black?
Also, have you downloaded the Music Mix? If so what do think? Like it dislike it whatever let me know.
