What’s this I hear you cry, “A Mini Mix for January – but we’ve already been delighted and amazed by The Dog with his January Music Mix”.
I know, but I’m a good natured canine and wanted to share even more great music with you – yet with a twist. The twist is that there is no information about the 12 tracks in the mix – I have renamed each one track 1, 2 etc and I would like you to simply download, press play, sit back and enjoy.
Now I know that there are ways of getting this information – but please try not to as I hope the discussion from this mix will be great, with maybe you trying to guess the names of the tracks and the artists etc. I would also like your views on what you feel about hearing a song without knowing who the artist is – kind of like wine-tasting with a blindfold on.
But of course my main aim is for you to enjoy the music as I have picked some new artists, some old ones and ones that even I had never heard of but they all have one thing in common – they make great music.
The January Mini Music Mix [an 83mb zip file] will be available for one month from today – until midnight on 15 February 2010.
As always, please support the artists – if you like a track, buy the album!
Enjoy
Laughing Dog

Great idea, Dog !
Wow hey Mr LD just logged on to make my Sunday morning go a bit faster in work and see we have aniother music mix to download wow great idea and I’m just downloading now. Looks like todays shift wont be so bad after all.
Great idea to have no info on the songs but did you know that track 3 has info? It called Resplendent by Vigilantes of Love.
Hey MR LD
Listened to the new mix today and its great just fab. One problem I dont have a clue apart from track 3 who many of the bands are in fact I feel a total loser cos I dont really no any – help me Mr SP.
Anyway it dont matter too much as the music is just great and its kinda weird not knowing the name of the band you listening bto
Hi Sinny – glad you like the music and the idea of the mini mix.
Don’t worry that you don’t know many of the artists there are some new and obscure bands in there. If you want to know a particular track let me know.
And yes I do know track 3 is showing info – dont know what happened but my Blog technician told me to blame the snow!!!
Finally got around to downloading this mini mix and playing it right now. So far sounds quite good, but it is a strange feeling not having a clue who is playing. I suppose that’s one way to keep an open mind about the music we are listening to though.
Anyway, I got to thinking – none of us won the competition to select the music for February’s mix – but how about a consolation prize. There were a few good guesses, and you must admit I did come sorta reasonably close-ish. Even if I was going for the album and not the song (I have to admit, I had never even heard of the album you ended up choosing). Surely the opportunity to select at least a track or two isn’t out of the question is it?
The card has taken a real hammering this weekend, but if you reveal what track 6 is, it’s going to get another tickle!!
Hey Mr LD I want to know what track 4 is great song
Track 6 is 34 Blues by Molina & Johnson
Spacey – what a good idea for you to select some tracks for the next mix (wish I had thought of it) – why don’t you select the 3-in-a-row for March’s Mix not the album of the month but the second one that has a theme or link similar to the Dave Rawlings one in January. The only thing I ask is that its not too long say around 20 minutes in total for the 3 songs.
I like this idea – if anybody else would like to follow Spacey and select the 3-in-a-row then let me know.
Hi Sinny – track 4 is Never green by Emancipator. His second albums not out yet, I downloaded this from his website where you can sample other tracks as well. It all sounds good chill out sort of stuff and I’ll be ordering.
Could I do a 3 in a row if I swear on Betty’s head that it won’t include Cilla?
How about the February mix is made up entirely of contributions!
I’m also loving track 6 enough to buy the Molina & Johnson album and dammit, now I have to go investigate other work by Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co.) and Centro-Matic.
Sigh. There are only 24 hours in a day you know.
Sorry, just read the “March” bit so ignore my February suggestion. I’d planned on selecting three slushy numbers…
Hi LZ – yes please but you’ll have to wait until April’s mix for you 3 in a row. Feb’s mix is done plus I reckon I’ll leave your idea of all contributing to a mix for a later date – maybe December when we can have a best of the year.
Note to Laughing Dog
Nice idea of mixing unknown tracks together. I have only listened to it a few times but I believe its a good mix even better for being only 12 tracks long.
I do believe I know a few of the tracks:
Track 5 – The Frames again can’t place the song
Track 7 – Jack Bruce and Robin Trower with the title track of their album Seven Moons (great album)
Track 10 – Nanci Griffith with a song called Still Life from her latest album The Loving Kind which see her back to her best.
I do believe that Spacepig is right when he suggests that listening to unknown songs keeps your mind open and you appreciate the music more.
Hey Mr K nice going
Mr LD can I pick a 3-in a row as well pls
Hi Ken – very good with 2.5 out of 3. Its not the Frames but Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (a.k.a The Swell Season) and their latest offering ”Strict Joy”.
But you are right with the other two – well done
Hi Sinny – Yes no problem, will let you know when soon but it wont be for a few mixes
Note to Laughing Dog – Interesting concept, listening to music with no information available on artist or track or even album. We should consider recording the results for research purposes.
It has made me listen to the mix more than I would normally as I am attempting to discover who the artists actually are. I have some idea on a few of the tracks but need some assistance on the others:
Track 1 – Not sure but I feel it could be The Black Crowes as I hear they have a new album out
Track 2 – Another slice of Americana but no idea on this track – sounds like The Spin Doctors or Wico. Very good song.
Track 8 – Has kept me awake at night. It is of course a great track and I can almost see this being performed. I do believe I have seen this band (if it is a band – live) but I cannot for the life of me remember when or where or who. I believe it’s an old progressive rock artist who has gone solo or formed a new band as I hear influences from Crimson, Curved Air and Zappa. Please put me out of misery.
Track 9 – I’m not a big fan of the blues but this is a good track but could be anyone as there is no vocal. I’ll guess at Derek Trucks
Track 11 – Remember that Beatles classic “I’ll get by with a little help from my friends”, well a friend of mine helped me on this track and I do believe it’s “To Ohio” by The Low Anthem. A very good song and I have since explored the album and while the rest of the album is not up to the standard of this lead track I did enjoy it.
Track 12 – Another great song but I no idea it actually reminds me of Tony Hadley so it could a track from one of his solo albums
Hi Ken – thanks for comments.
I wont reveal all just yet as other guys may wish to guess some of the tracks – but I will put you out of your misery and say that track 8 is by UKZ with a song called TU-95.
UncleRaveDave, r u familiar with Funky Cold Marina??
