Big Big Train – The Difference Machine

Big Big Train

Recently re-discovered this album while looking for songs for next months music mix – and had forgotten how good it is.

This is the fifth album by the band and was released in 2007. It’s apparently a concept album exploring chaos theory, communication, failure, death, loss, and bereavement that revolves around the tale of the death of an individual, which was linked to an exploding star in a distant galaxy…………….mmm OK!!!

You can hear the influences of early Genesis and other prog rock bands but I like it for its use of saxophone and flute, combined with excellent musicianship, some lovely melodies and its unashamed need to explore these melodies to the full with three of the songs over 12 minutes long. I have to be in the mood to enjoy – but when I am, there’s nothing better than relaxing on the sofa with a glass of red and some deep joy in my ear phones.

Big Big Train have an excellent website where you can listen to tracks and download over 75 minutes of music for free including the title track of their new album ‘THE UNDERFALL YARD’ which is a whopping 23 minutes long but just amazing. You are also able to buy an album from their website with The Dog just ordering ‘THE UNDERFALL YARD’ as I just love the title track.

You’ll hear one of the songs ‘Summer Lease”on February’s Music Mix as it’s the second but last track and brings the mix to a delightful conclusion. Highly recommended.
