Is it me? Is it my medication? Is it the lack of Merlot in my veins?
But I think a band should look and act like a band – not like a bunch of bloody Art teachers that used to haunt me in my youth. Nice but dim on the outside but psychopathic gaylords on the inside. “Be bold with your pastels, young man”.
No disrespect to Grizzly Bear, its not a bad song and I don’t expect them to go all ‘Kiss’ on me and strut around like a peacock with no balls, but come on, a little bit of movement, a little bit of anger maybe, a little bit of “who gives a ****”, and maybe a little less of the man from BHS look, dandylion tea and a bit more rock’n'roll please.
I think that they look like rather nice young men – it’s you wot is getting on in years and becoming a bit of a “get off my lawn!” old git.
Also, what’s wrong with BHS?!
Liefste zus – you could be right
Having had a sneak preview of the December mix I will forgive you the anti-BHS jibe
Erm, make that the January mix. And p.s. where the bleep has this year gone?
LD, I think you may be confusing the artist with the image. Would you go to a Santana concert expecting to see Mick Jagger ? A Leonard Cohen concert expecting to see Iggy Pop ? If I were a short, fat, arhythmic old fart (ok, scratch that, I AM a short, fat, arhythmic old fart), but made great music, that should preclude me from ypur Awesome Artists list ? Move over David Crosby ! What about your recent flavour-of-the-month, Kraftwerk ? Some bands / artists put on a great show but make shite music, others are quite the opposite. Shakira = short, way cute, breasts that can’t be confused with mountains – but her music (generally) leaves me cold. Nina Simone = ewwww ! – but a voice like an angel on 2 packs a day. Which would I rather listen to ? Do you want to WATCH your music (yes, sometimes) or LISTEN to it ?
PS: LD, most of the geriatrics that you (and even more so I, among the Blues Brigade) still enjoy, would need a couple of cases of Red Bull just to get through one show today. But I know we’d still sacrifice the customary left testicle to see them live !
UncleRaveyDavey – you do have a grand way with words but I get your point.
However, I think if we (minus our left testicles) went to see one of the Blue Geriatrics, they might need a zimmer frame to get them to the stage, but at least we would have them demonstrating some kind of emotion, some kind of warmth – they would be “into their music”. Even Kraftwerk have been known to blink more than once during a show – in fact I have seen video clips where there is certainly the ‘wow’ factor there – not by them but by the video’s, lights etc.
Unlike Grizzly Bear where the ‘wow’ factor comes form the fact that they have a newly ironed shirt on and the emotion and warmth only comes from the cup of Bovril passed round at the interval.
Hey Mr LD – good point and you are right. Whenever I go to a gig I expect something a bit more than just watching the band stand and play however good that band are you can listen to the music at home. A great example is AC/DC who were just fantastic with Angus and the singer running around all night, we also had great lights, canons evrything that made it an amazing night. Dont’ think Grizzly Bear would have the same effect on me do you?
Please tell me this guy could look anything BUT boring:

Hi Sinny – AC/DC, while being on average I guess around 35 years older than Grizzly Bear, are still able to put on a great show, still sell out stadiums, still provide the WOW factor. Now I know that the music is different and this is not what GB intend to be – but they should give their fans some kind of show.
Hi UncleRaveDave – no not boring in fact very interesting. As we have discussed, it’s not just about going crazy on stage – other factors are involved with heart and honesty included and Matisyahu while being unique has plenty of heart and honesty.
I disagree. The CONCEPT of an American Hasidic Jewish Reggae musician is interesting; this particular video is as boring as watching paint set. Personally, I find him very atonal and was quite surprised to find that he was nominated for a Grammy. Without the novelty of being an AHJR musician, I doubt he’d have been easily noticed.
And, forgive me for this, but my limited exposure to Seasick Steve has me thinking similar thoughts – without the novelty of his 3-string guitar, hmmmm, I wonder … ? His songs all sound the same, all the video lips I’ve seen have him telling the same ‘witty” one-liners about his drummer; I find him a bit of a one-trick pony. At least (unlike Matisyahu) he IS interesting to watch though – that is, until the novelty wears off. Maybe he’ll grow on me, the jury is still on final delibaration on this one. I DO like the blues ….
Anyway – what you think of January’s music mix? Post your thoughts below Ken’s – he seemed to like it.
and where’s Spacey gone????
Don’t worry, Spacey hasn’t gone, he’s hanging in there. Christmas mania over, time to start winding you mob up again!
Problem is though, I do agree with Uncle RD about Seasick Steve. I loved Dog House Music and still play it regularly, but from there it appears to be all downhill. Started Out With Nothing was just plain old boring and sounds tired already. And, first time seeing him play live was amusing and witty, but the same old stories just getting trotted out. he’s playing Dublin quite soon, but I don’t think I’ll bother going.
Is this the future of Music As We Know It ?

Thanks URD interesting but what we’re actually seeing is 2 guys using technology to open doors but basically playing with themselves in their bedroom – sounds OK – but I hope it’s not the future of music. Especially when some arsehole writes this as a comment “thats amazing ! you guys have never met? you should! you play better than? the original:P”
The future of music; big topic – think I’ll start a discussion (after you start the Why I love the ’80′s discussion of course). I feel the future of music is live (either virtual or real), artist driven and focused on the song not album. But lets chat more later.
I remember being in France around 2002 I think, in a camp site with the Dog family – Wednesday night was live music night and I was blessed to witness 4 young French guys play classic rock all night. They played after the bingo and there must have only been about 5 or 6 of us in the bar but they played Stairway to Heaven and other classics for around 2 hours. Every note was perfect, the singer/guitarist looked around 12 but boy could he sing and play – it was simply amazing. Makes these guys look ordinary (which they are I think).
