Muse release new album enters charts at No. 1 (congrats)
Porcupine Tree release new album enters charts at No. 23 (amazing it’s so high)
But The Resistance (Muse) is not a very good album – think Muse trying to be Queen (again) and realizing they’re not then going back to producing a Muse album in a similar way to someone painting a copy of a Van Gogh using “Painting by Numbers”.
Now think The Incident (Porcupine Tree) it is an exceptional album – a master piece.

So why is Muse at No 1?

I’m not quite sure where you got the chart positions from Mr Hound, I have to assume it’s from Amazon as that’s the positions they hold there. Which leads me to an interesting point. Muse are at No 1 having spent 43 days in the top 100. Porcupine Tree are at No 22 having spent 39 days in the Top 100. Very interesting when you consider that both albums were released on September 14th.
Now I’m no maths genius, but today is 23rd September which by my calculations makes 9 days since release. Eh? Although you can pre-order most CDs, payment isn’t actually taken until they dispatch them so in effect, they haven’t actually sold them until they post them as you can still cancel the order. I think I’m going to have to raise a few questions at work tomorrow.
I can’t compare the two as I don’t have The Muse one and I have no real intention of investing in it until I have heard at least some of it. I’m still letting the PT one wash over me until I give it my final verdict but there are undoubtedly some classic tracks on there.
MR. LD and Piggy,
Not a big fan of Muse dont know why as everyone else seems to love them. Time is Running out is a great song though as is some of their early stuff. I suppose the reason their no. 1 and Porcupine are not is that no-one has heard of Porcupine Tree except for people like you two – which aint a bad thing. Been on PTs myspace and they sound good – think I may buy the CD tomorrow
I’m going to stick my head on the block here and wait for The Dog to swing the axe! Wait for this, but excellent as it is to us old prog heads, I don’t really think that this is the best introduction to Porcupine Tree for a new listener.
I’m beginning to get a rough idea of your taste in music Mr Sin, and in all honesty, I don’t think that The Incident will convert you. A better idea might be to try out some of their earlier releases first and for you I recommend either In Absentia or Deadwing. I could be wrong of course, and I hope I am, but this CD doesn’t adhere to your favoured 4 minute, verse, chorus, verse format and I really don’t want you put off the band.
Of course, another option is to dive in headfirst and get what is probably the best concert DVD ever released and grab a copy of Arriving Somewhere.
Well my friend Spacepig -you may be right as both In Absentia and Deadwing are great albums with Blackest Eyes being the first PT song I heard and still one of my favourites. But, I feel that The Incident just sounds so modern so up-to-date so good a true rock album for 2009 that everyone could…….given a couple of open ears enjoy.
Sin Again try The Incident (or In Absentia or Deadwing – though not sure if they are available here in Doha) – try it give 4 or 5 listens on a good quality pair of headphones – couple of glasses of your favourite tipple………then let us know what you think
I’d be interested to know how they work out chart positions too, although they don’t really mean much to me – I can remember my Dad saying the first sign of getting old is when you don’t know who is No. 1 in the Hit Parade.
The chart positions came from BBC
Let the new PT wash over you then please write me a review – already posted mine on Amazon BTW

and smile I did – thank you Spacepig
Mr SP
Too Late bought The Incident yesterday and I think I’m at the same stage as you letting it ‘wash over me’ but it sounds good although I did think I had my hifi on repeat a couple of times when a melody line reappeared again and again but no its good not my first choice and I am finding it hard going in places but there are also some fab tunes there as well with Time Flies one that stands out.
Good stuff
But whats this Gong thing??????????
Aha, you’ve followed the link have you? Whatever you do my friend, don’t take Gong seriously. I can assure you that no one has for the last 40 years, just think of them as a bit of fun, a musical representation of your first ever chemically inspired experience. I would like to say that they are the silliest band ever, but you know me by now and I think you know that I have plenty more up my sleeve for future use.
Good to hear that you are giving Porcupine Tree a fair listen. I will understand if it’s not quite your thing so after you’ve heard it a few times give us a fair comment or two on it.
