Song of the Month, Sept 09 – Nick Cave “Into My Arms”

One day I was just listening to a new CD I had bought in a bargain bin in Woolworths – can’t even remember where or when or how – but all of the sudden this song started with a lovely piano intro followed by just the most amazing lyrics (how many songs do you know with the words “interventionist God” in?)

I went “what the ****” and instantly fell in love with this great song – hope you do too.

I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don’t believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candle burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

Not a bad song – but not his best. I liked his version of Johnny Cash’s Mercy Seat

No I cant agree with this – his version of Mercy Seat is not half as good as Mr. Cash. I found it too long and dreary.

Fair enough Young Sinner I respect your right to disagree with my opinion. But I stick with it. I think that Nick Cave puts so much more emotion into the song and brings the emotions inside it much more to the front of it. For me, you can hear the fear in the voice, not so much the fear of what he’s done, but what’s to come.
Whilst I have the utmost respect for Johnny Cash, and bear in mind that I am generally not a fan of country music, I do think that this is a great song and easily beats anything that any present day band has come come up with.

I agree with you Mr P – in fact this version is good but I think the CD version is better.

The lyrics are unusual and make you think – I had an ex-girlfriend (Jane B) who loved this song so it has good memeories for me
