Album of the Month ~ August 09 ~ Scott Matthews – ‘Elsewhere’

scott mathews elsewhereIt says on his My Space page that Scott Matthews created his second album ‘Elsewhere’ with a single aim in mind. “I wanted to make a record that locks you in,” he says, “something that gives you a feeling that stays with you. For me, making music is all about creating a mood.

Well he certainly has achieved this and more.

Released on May 18, 2009 ‘Elsewhere’ is the follow-up to Matthews’ first album ‘Passing Stranger’, which I believe is still one of the best albums of the past few years, going Silver in the UK, winning him an Ivor Novello and contains one of my favourite songs ‘Dream Song’ (watch out for for this to be included in a future music mix).

The songs on ‘Elsewhere’ are darker than his debut album but not black, more a different shade of grey. Listen to ‘Fractured’, ‘Jagged Melody’ and ‘12 Harps’ a duet with Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant and you will realize the depth of feeling found here. Also look out for a wide mix of different instruments – a flute on ‘Jagged Melody’, a lovely bit of trumpet on ‘Suddenly You Figure Out’ – mmm nice, certainly creating a mood.

I like this album and recommend it to all who enjoyed his debut and to all who like good songs, great voice and lyrics that make you think a bit.
